How do I go about sending mail to my son. He just arrived May 31st. I don't have any info on him yet!

Hello! In the next week-2 weeks, you will receive the form letter. This will have their graduation date, mailing address, info on places to stay and things to do in the area, as well as a packet of general information. I received my form letter in about a week and a half, but it may take longer for certain families. It also depends on if they pass their run the first time or not. Hope this helped!

Their run? Thank you
What about the Sandboxx? How does this work?

I am not the most informed person on the topic of the first week of boot camp, but here's what I do know. After processing, (usually takes about five days I believe) your recruit will have to meet some basic requirements. I know that one of these is a run, I believe it's a mile and a half and they have 16 minutes to complete and pass. If they pass, their form letter is sent out. If they don't, they have to try again (on a different day I think) and then the letter is sent out. I'd assume you would probably hear from him at the end of next week or the week after that.

If you don't already know, Sandboxx is an app for your phone (iPhone or Android) that you can download and use to send letters. It's free to download, but you have to purchase the letter packages.

I love it! I got my boyfriend's address this past Saturday, so I stuck some letters in the mail and I sent him one on Sandboxx. I just bought the 3 pack, which is $11. I mainly used it just so he could hear from one of us as quickly as possible. You get 3000 characters and a picture included in this letter. It also gives you notifications as to when the letter has shipped, and when it has been delivered to RTC and who signed off on it. It was really nice to know that he was able to read my letter last night, and the speed of it alone is worth it. My letter I sent through the mail on the same day probably won't reach him till the end of the week, if not the beginning of next week. The only real downfall that I can see from Sandboxx is that it's not handwritten, which is a little less 'special'. The picture included helps make up for that though (:

The average time to receive the form letter now is seldom less than 10 business days after arrival and can be 14 business days or more after arrival for some, especially if the recruit failed the first PFA and passed on the second attempt. (See Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) and Fitness Improvement Training (FIT).)

Welcome Lyn Marie, you would wait for his address which comes on the form letter along with his PIR Date. it usually comes 10 to 14 days after the box is received, then he will have to pass his first intial Run before the form is sent. things have changed a bit. I will put the sites for you Ma'am.

Welcome Lynn Marie.  Patience is going to be your friend.  The info from PhoenixMom is correct.  Also your mail arrival will depend on how close you are to GL.  Letters mailed before you get the form letter do not get to your SR any faster since the division has to train a Mail Petty Officer before any mail will be delivered to the recruit regardless of when it arrives at the GL Mail room.  Letters with the wrong address will be delayed in delivery.  Please read as much as you can.  It helps and may answer some of your other questions as well.  Write as much and as often as you can and make sure you number both the letters and the envelopes so they know the order to open them.  Keep your letters to single stamp weight and size (Cards are fine) NO GLITTER, SINGING CARDS, COLORED Envelopes or anything else that will draw attention to your SR.  Avoid Newsprint as the ink can get transferred to their uniforms and cause issues.  Know that even though you are writing daily (or so...) Your SR is only given time to write home on Sunday.  Some sneak extra in but for the most part they have so many other things they need to do that they may not write home as often as you'd like.  Mail goes out on Monday only so once you get that first letter that will be your mail day (how long on average it takes mail to reach you.)  While you only get mail 1 day a week it is delivered to them every day (except Sunday) so try and send something from someone as much as you can every day.

There are no dumb questions. Many of us have been here before and we are happy to help you through this!!
