Every A school is a different length.  They have individual class graduations, not one big ceremony for all the schools.  And yes, there can be varying hold times, waiting for enough students to fill a class, and especially if the school is broken into sections.  Which A school for which rating?  There are quite a few at Great Lakes.

I'm trying to figure out this A School.  It's seems to be different than other ratings.  Child graduated in May....trying to figure out when the graduation would be.  Any suggestions?  Even my sailor isn't totally sure.

Thank You Anti M that was very informative.

Hi Butterball! how are you? I'm guessing all the barracks are set up differently, Glad to know all is well with your Sailor. My Son is in Barracks on North Island SD. he shares a room with 3 other Young Sailors. Looks like an apartment 2 to a room really small but has a Kitchen with Fridge and stove top and Microwave. Not to shabby. a small living room fully furnished. So all in all doing well for himself Loves the weather! Have a Great Day Ladies!

I was in a small room, in one of the very old barracks.  They're still in use, but being phased out.  We had bunkbeds, but many of the male barracks did not.  All the risers which joined the beds had been taken away because they had been used as weapons during the Summer Riot of 1979.  I arrived in 1980.  The Navy uses buildings and furniture until it falls apart, so it is entirely possible the racks might still be in use!  Nothing changes drastically or quickly.  Even my dad's experiences in the Navy WWII through Vietnam, were relevant to my experiences.  Some things really do not change.

For anyone wondering where the liberty phases originated, here's the article about the riot:

Each bed across from each other sorry. not one on top of the other but very high up.

Hi Anti M the pic I have of my Son and his Barracks there were no headboards but again the were remodeling some barracks when he left? They lloked like Bunkbeds really high and desk underneath four to a room. but things may have changed.

Comment by Anti M on June 19, 2018 at 6:05pm

Do not mistake the barracks for college dorms, they are sparse and lacking in decor.  The only detail I can't find out currently is if the racks still have a headboard shelf.  We were allowed small personal items kept neatly on that shelf, such as clocks, books, a photo in a frame.  I have no idea if that is still acceptable.
