Hello All!

First time on this site. My youngest is shipping off to RTC on 6/13 and I am a mess!  So proud of him, but really having a difficult time letting go. Been reading everything I can, but I’m not so sure that helps! LOL!

Any advice on how to keep it together for the next 8-9 weeks?

Another week is coming to an end. Imagine how much he is doing every week! I was in boot camp in the late 80’s. I can remember some things like it was just last week. You are going to love what you see at PIR.

I have another question... I’ve been reading info on a website that gives you what happens day to day at navy bootcamp. It says that during week 2 many of them have to get their wisdom teeth removed. How do they determine who needs them removed? Is this only if they have an issue with their teeth?

The Navy only does dental work that is needed. The dentists at the RTC consider if there may be a problem in the future and remove one, two, three, or all four of the wisdom teeth if needed. If there is a question, they may indicate that the teeth are to be checked at "A" School and removed then if needed. They also may put off removal of wisdom teeth until later if there is dental work that needs to be taken care of first. Some may not need any wisdom teeth removed; my son still had his wisdom teeth when he was retired after 6 2/3 years of service. If it is determined that the recruit does need to have one or more wisdom teeth removed, this is scheduled at a time that will be the least disruptive to training and often several in the division have it done on the same day so they are recovering together. The recruits have 2 days SIQ and have someone who checks to see that the recruits are taking their pain meds and drinking plenty of water as directed. They then have at least one day of LLD and must be checked before returning to full training. This is similar to the recovery time given in the civilian world. They are well taken care of and there have been recruits who were happy to have the time to rest and others who didn't have to have the teeth removed who wished that they had once they saw how their shipmates were treated while they had to clean the head or do other jobs in the compartment and continue with PT. Having any or all of the wisdom teeth removed does not normally change the recruit's PIR date.

If your recruit requires additional dental work, s/he will get that on board the USS Osborne. (See http://www.lovell.fhcc.va.gov/locations/USSOsborne.asp.)

Ok thanks for the info!!

You are very welcome.

I am receiving a letter today I am sure it is the formal letter but I was still excited to just see her name, even though it’s not her normal handwriting. I have two letters ready to send. I hope to hear from here next week. I will hopefully book hotel today and then can relax a little

I was also wondering if a guest coming to my daughters PIR has military is can he only reserve a room for him or two rooms?

If you are thinking of the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites on base, then yes, the one with military ID can sponsor you, but there are restrictions. If you book at the Navy Lodge, then your son can be your sponsor. See the info in Saving Money PIR Weekend.

Did you get a graduation date yet?
I noticed that some ppl have received their form letters. I have not yet got that in the mail. How long does it usually take? Is it normal for it to come later?

It now takes 9 to 14 business days after your recruit's arrival to receive The Form Letter. Today was the 12th business day, so you are still within that window.

Ok thank you! I was starting to get concerned when I saw others say they received their letter and I haven’t.
