Hello group!

My girl left for Boot Camp on July 30, 2018. I'm tentatively expecting PIR to be September 28. She will be going to Ft. Meade for A school. my question is, does every sailor have an overnight liberty before flying to Ft. Meade? Is it typically one night or 2? Thanks in advance!

Sorry Jster’s Mom. We just got a letter yesterday from our Recruit re: his PIR in two weeks (can’t wait!). He has about 12 hours of Liberty, from the completion of PIR ceremony to 10 pm at night. BUT he wants to be back on base by 9 to avoid any snafus he told us. He then leaves for A school from zone of the local airports at about 3-4 AM Saturday morning. So plan for hours together in Great Lakes, not days together somewhere else. :(

Congrats to you and him, I guess we will just have to make the most of a little time.

No Sailor has overnight Liberty the night of PIR, not even those staying in GL. Your Sailor will most likely fly out the day after PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.  (That link is in the info I put on your My Page with the MC info in February.)

I'm so confused. I see talk of bringing PJs for the hotel room. Maybe that's for future liberties?

Jster's mom - The talk of PJs for the hotel room is so that your sailor has lounge clothes to change into while they are in the hotel room with you. - I just brought shorts & T-shirt.

I don't know about the sailors who stay in GL, but my son flew out the Saturday after PIR. He is Nuke and they and the other sailors who were at the airport with him, flying to different A schools all had to be in their dress uniform (whites for him). Most likely your daughter will be in her dress whites as well , I don't think they will change to dress blues by her PIR.

The entire day on Friday of PIR and also on Saturday, they have to be in their dress uniforms when they are outside of their hotel room. If they do go swimming at the pool, then they must be in their PT gear as I understand (uniform issue).

Sorry for any confusion the comments caused. Be sure to go to the link that Lemonelephant gave you about PIR weekend. There is a lot of information there. Then I believe she also has a link to my discussion that tells about those flying out of GL to their A school.

Here are the phases they go thru in GL A school.

Thanks so much Chipmunk!

If your Loved one stays in GL some can have sleep pants to sleep in and a nice blanket I also bought my son some shirts and underpants but he was told what he could have, they had a fridge in there room and was able to take leftovers back but in a plastic container. From my understanding all BEQ's are different so I would find out from your Sailor on what he can have it not have.

Tennis shoes buy new pair because if they continue with the old pair from BC they will hurt their feet or get fractures. I can't say why it would be different from one barracks to the next but it is. Not all have fridges not all have same rules. But I know my son took back new pjs, shirts, blanket, socks, tennis and a Iphone. They went thru everything sat. Evening was ok to keep. They will get briefed when taken to A school part if it so your Sailor should be told what he/she can take back. I hope that helped.

Thanks so much for all of the good info, Phoenixmom. I feel like such a newbie!

Jster's mom - We were all newbies at one point. That is why we are here to help others out.

My daughter left on 7/31 to BC. I got to see her yesterday in a video posted. Maybe they in the same division.
