My husband is in bootcamp right now and he is going to be a hospital corpsman. I know after bootcamp he goes to San Antonio, Texas for A school. A few other ladies who have corpsman too said that theirs have to go to San Diego for Marine Fleet Training too. Do all of the corpsman have to do that or do they choose to do it? My husband has never mentioned going there so I don't think he has to but I'm not sure. Any info would help.

Thanks (:

There are a LOT of groups for HM.  Here are most of them.  Check them out and see if any will help you.  Each is a clickable link.

Hi Charlie: My son also went to SA for Corpsman A school. He graduated early Oct..  He did well in classes and got to choose his duty station. He chose stateside. Others in his class chose to do FTMB training (further training for the battlefield) which would eventually attach them to a Marine unit.  My son is now an HN working at a Naval clinic in the Washington DC area.

My advice for your husband is to study VERY VERY VERY hard during Corpsman school. Generally the better you do, the more likely he will get to choose where he wants to be stationed from the available options.

Also, I have heard a lot of people on the Corspman group saying their sailor is getting tired of waiting to class up.. my recommendation would be to get a hold of the study material and start reviewing it. They cram a lot of information into the 12 weeks. If he has to wait to class up - study, but also enjoy the free time - because when classes start..plan on being in the classroom from 8-5 then up all night studying for tests!

San Antonio can be very fun..lots to do in spare time too!

Have fun and good luck to your husband..I'm sure he will do very well.

FMTB training is now mandatory. The only question is when you do the training.  Something to consider when thinking about HM as a rating.

Hannah: I was not aware that FMTB is mandatory?? When did this take effect? Thanks, Laura

Hi Laura, here's one link, but if you search this site you'll find more.

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/sailorsinaschoolforcorpsmen?groupU...

Also, if you search Craig's navydep.com site, there are postings. Here's a link to what I found before. Scroll down past the HM Rating description info sheet.

http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1776&highlight=f...

They refer to FMF and FMTB here. FMTB is the training that's mandatory. FMF is an earned Rating/Rank and my understanding is it's "voluntold" but your choices vary depending on how well you do in A and C schools. That's also true of the timing of when you go to FMTB.  Hannah

Women rarely get that, as that puts them into combat situations.  Not currently allowed for females.

Right. All males will go through FMTB.
