We Stitch Love is a program where we create pillowcases and other handmade items for our deployed military.

Our goal is to help these heroes have a little bit of ‘home’ while they are away from home. We are helping them with sweet dreams when they take a break.

A cooperative effort and one of the many things we volunteers do through Molly’s Adopt a Sailor. We send to MAS monthly adoption and to the hospitals for Special Hugs http://www.navyformoms.com/group/mollysadoptasailorproject/forum/to...

Email any questions, information or suggestions to  westitchlove@mollysadoptasailor.com

Pillowcases can be sewn together or premade cases can be decorated with paint or tie dyed. There are several different ways to make a premade case special if you don’t sew. As long as there is love inserted through effort, they are stitched with love!

A standard size pillow is 20”x26”. Pillowcases should be at least 22”x28” or longer. The body of the pillowcase should have at least one side that is soft to sleep on and without seams where their head will rest. There are different ways to sew a pillowcase. Here are a couple different ways.

Always prewash fabric and premade cases to remove sizing and shrinkage. (Adding a little vinegar helps to soften the fabric and set the dyes)

A different version is to cut the body 24”x44” and use an 8”x44” band. Sew band to body, press seam towards band top. Stitch side and bottom of body, zigzag edges so they don’t fray. Turn inside out, press and top stitch band seam. Turn down ¼” and press, fold over a 1” hem and stitch.

Be sure and post pictures of your completed pillowcases and of any sewing parties.

Hi Kim ,carol and valeriejean,
Hope you all had a good day ,hopefully with family too :)

The story behind the pcs has been a lifesaver for me ,that's why I have boxes done ,literally boxes full ! Since Febuary I have been bouncing back and forth between my home in Boston and my husbands appartment in Buffalo ny . We are selling and moving to SC having become empty nesters of 4 ,3 in a six week period last Fall .
Just having the pcs to decorate and the dye has kept me busy and feeling a bit closer to my kids .
I have 2 sons in Italy and San Diego ,one in hawaii and a daughter in school in Ny . I know I would get a lump in my throat and tear in my eye if they told me they had received a package from strangers who support and care about what they are doing .since the boys have been in I have met wonderful ladies on N4ms and great friends like Dona / NYPD . I love what we do to help .......thanks ladies :)

Hi Sheryl - thanks for sharing...I am glad you are able to feel closer to your kids by decorating the pillowcases...that is important!

I am happy to save my pc for October since rumor has it we will be able to send them... also means that I have more time to finish them if Sept keeps going at it's current crazy pace!

Just got boosebumps, and a couple of drippy eyes, Sheryl.  Hugs

Couldn't pass this one up.  giggle

Hello all fellow stitchers and pillowcase decorators.  Start up your project (or continue if you never stop--lol!)  We're doing to need about 300 pillowcases soon  (hints will be appearing.)   Thanks  <3

My Cub scout mom just told me she wants to do pillowcases next week. She said there could be up to 25 boys!! For anyone who has done this with cub scouts or other younger kids before, what seems to work best for them and what do they like doing?  I only have one set of 12 fabric markers and about 15 white cases :(  I am asking the parents to bring a white case per kid and am hoping that someone will have more fabric markers/fabric paint.  We live in such a small town, that if no one has them on hand, we could be out of luck.

I think I will cut out some shapes using my cricut and put them on backing so they can be ironed on.  Sound ok?

Any suggestions welcome!

You are on the right path!  Put cardboard wrapped in plastic bag or foil inside the pillowcase so color stays on one side.  I just tie-died all my white ones or would send you some.  Be sure the pillowcases are washed first, and do not use fabric softener.  Then heat set as the package instructs you to do.

I have seem many different mediums to use to decorate pillowcases. Spray painting over stencils,tie-dye, etc. I have Googled some of them. When my daughter was little we used fabric crayons that you can set with an iron. Just make sure there is a soft side to sleep on and no glitter (it gets in the water when they wash them and gets all over their other clothes). When I made Ethan's pillowcase this last deployment, I printed pictures of his daughter onto fabric paper and then ironed them on to the band of the case and stitched around them.

Were the pics washable?  I have the stuff to do that, too, but I thought it couldn't get wet.  I put a pic of the Cape St. George on fabric paper and added that to their banner when I made it last spring.  It turned out really nice.

Yes it is washable, it's fabric that has a paper backing and it goes through the printer. You don't have to reverse the image as it prints out just like a picture would also. I found it at Walmart in the craft area. I can send you a few sheets if you would like me to? Just let me know and I can get it in the mail today.

Oh, I purchased some special fabric paint in spray cans at Joanne's that were all camo colors.  I had my teen daughter and her friend try them out spraying over stencils and it was a complete DISASTER!  Good thing I had them practice first on scraps.  The paint bled on the edges and puddled up in the middle.  We tried spraying from higher up, with sweeping strokes.  Nothing decent.  Urg! I am going to leave them at home next week :)  The spray paint and the giggly teen daughters!!! lol

Sorry you had problems.  I've used the squirt on bottles, and the spray bottles.  The key, to me, is that LESS tie dye is better.
