Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

My son sent two letter one to us and one to his little brother. Said he really enjoys knowing whats going on back home.  Wants his brother to tell his friends hello and to keep him informed of how they are doing.  He also asked for addresses and phone numbers, said he bought a small address book.  Said so far he is having fun, and it feels amazing to stand or march down the road in his uniform.  Said it is a lot of hard work and even more disapline. He is starting to sound like an adult--told his little brother the sooner he learns about hard work and disapline the easier life will be. I sent away a boy and on the 6th of September I will be reunited with a man.  So excited to see him.

Also Zachmoms, my son is going in reserves after A school. Here's the group
http://www.navyformoms.com/group/navyreserves but I am not sure what your SR means. Is he going to A school after PIR?

Also, Ship13/333 , rec'd a short letter from my son today. He thanked me for all the support . ( I'm making sure a piece of news and a note goes out everyday), says there are a lot of Awesome people in his div and its moving relatively fast. I think studying around the clock for 2 weeks for his finals at UCLA right before leaving for BC vs BC , he's liking the change. He's mature for his 22 yrs and I told him to make sure he looks after the young kids that away for the 1st time and struggling to support them , Many are away for their 1st time and its life changing. Looking so fwd to PIR. Cannot wait to meet all his new friends. :)

Those in active duty will have Reserves when they get out for a while.

Comment by diannep on August 1, 2013 at 9:06pm

zachsmom:  Did he go into bootcamp without a job?  FTLW's son is in the Reserves so she may have more info.

Glad to see some are getting calls and letters :) Hopefully it will start getting better for them soon. The RDC's make begin to appear human again :) As parent's we are all pretty much in boot camp while they are as well. Training ourselves to get used to the times when communication will not be very good. But I must say after my daughter has been in more than 3 years boot camp was the worst part for me and for her. So it will get better :)

He made a comment on the phone about just being in reserves for awhile. Not exactly sure what that means or if that is even possible. Somebody? Anybody?

Sharla~What did her letter say? We can make it through this together!! It's nice to have other mom's/dad's going through this difficult time, and most of all they don't cut you down for the feelings you are having. Diannep~I can't count how many times I have reminded him of that. I'm thinking, right now he is not allowing himself to hear it. I am hoping he will get to the point where he can actually focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. We all just want the best for our kids.....otherwise this wouldn't be so difficult!! Right?

Comment by Sharla on August 1, 2013 at 8:19pm

I'm with you ZachsMom, I'm worried about the same thing, and praying she's just having a bad week.  Mine's just going off a one-paragraph letter from Sunday, so I'm hoping things got better, but I feel your anxiety.  We just have to pray for their strength and resilience.

Comment by diannep on August 1, 2013 at 8:17pm

Please remind your SRs that bootcamp is NOT what A School and duty stations are like.  It gets so much better, but there are lessons being taught in bootcamp that they will take into the fleet with them.
