That's what killed me during boot camp. Been spoiled for a year being able to talk everyday and send pics. I'm with you though. Not scared. Just happy he's doing what he wants and will see some of the world. Glad he does not have to point a gun at someone.

My sailor left on his first underway last week. I'm not anxious or scared about what he's doing. I rather enjoy wondering what he's doing at any given moment.

I do miss being able to text him with the little day to day things tho...

Kitty, my son is on the Providence as an ET and was telling me he's expecting a nub to come help out who just graduated Groton so I'm wondering if that's your son!

Comment by myvampress on October 21, 2016 at 7:26am
Thank you ladies for all of your input on things to do in and around Groton, I forwarded all of it to my son. He was in Newport, RI for awhile since he went to OCS there so he is familiar with all the sites. He does have his car with him and I don't believe he needs a blue pass since he is an Officer and not an enlisted. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Myvampress, CT has a many parks with hiking, the problem would be getting there if he doesn't have a car. There is probably a MWR office that would have information, or he could call a library.

The Guilford Land Trust maintains a number of publically accessible properties. See http://guilfordlandtrust.org/wordpress/properties.

Guilford is about a 40 minute drive from the base. I mention it because Westwoods there was one of my favorite places when I was a teen, and I was on the East River trails a year ago.
