Oh my, JayDee, that's bad. Regardless of the job, people are still giving up years of their lives in service to their country. And from a veteran. Well, I could say things but this is a public forum. The good news is that the nuke community on the ship is tight. They support each other and develop life-long bonds. This includes the women. I have heard my son speak with only respect of his female nuke colleagues.

I don't care about the rating snobs. I'm so proud of our kids who do this for their country. Every person who gets into this program are there because they qualified. Whether their path veered into something else or they completed the pipeline, they have demonstrated something special. So, pooh on those naysayers. Nukes rule!

NancyJo, yes they are both MM's starting prototype.  Someone, maybe you mentioned that Nuke's aren't super popular on their ships.  I'm starting to see how true this might be.  I was standing in line at the grocery talking to a Navy Veteran.  He asked me what my daughter did in the Navy (I was wearing a Navy mom shirt).  When I told him he kind of sniffed and said "well, thank her for her service anyway". Anyway?  Really?  I wanted to thank him for retiring but I kept my mouth shut.  Kind of stinks that upper command lets this happen.

I know, JayDee, the poor pets, especially with the hurricane mess. Heartbreaking. But I agree that a pet can bring such comfort. They are therapy when times are tough. I'm glad your sailor has a pet that helps her like that. I can't remember...is her hubby a nuke too?

Comment by JayDee659 on October 27, 2016 at 10:31am

Thanks NancyJo.  I've read the prototype info here on our page and understand from conversations that it can be tough.  She's never been the top student but has done well in A & Power schools.  Hoping Prototype fits her personal style and that she and her husband do well.  I feel bad for her dog, poor thing has moved to a new home and had a crazy schedule.  When they were home during the hurricane I offered to keep her dog with me.  Sailor wants her dog though, and I know she gives her comfort.  Sailors hubby loves her too.  At the same time I know that poor pup just doesn't understand.

JayDee, lots on your sailor's plate. Prayers that she navigates through this OK. Seeing Grandma will be good.

B'sNuke, sounds like college boy is doing so well. I assume his shoulder is doing well? Enjoy that FB game! I'm a Husker fan and love love love the games. We haven't had the good team we have had in the past but for now we are in the top 10 and loving that. It may be a different story after Sat.'s game. :(

Mindya, these are tough days for your sailor but it sounds like you are doing the right thing. We are the cheerleaders. Hang in there!

B'sBukeMom - how exciting that you'll get everyone home for Christmas! My college daughter will be home with her boyfriend but we are unsure about sailor and husband. She just started prototype Monday but thinks she will not get time at Christmas. :( She does get a break at Thanksgiving but are going to see his grandma. Her health is declining and this might be the last visit.

Hi all - Happy Wednesday!

NancyJo - glad you made it back safe & sound.  Sounds like the service was very nice and so good that you got to spend time with your family.

CoTwin - congrats on being a survivor!  Boy I can't even imagine going through that with 2 year old twins.  What a celebration for you now though :)  And beautiful picture from Colorado!

Mindya - just remind him not to worry too much about when the graduation happens as all his time counts towards his commitment.  It will just be a whole 'nother set of challenges once in the fleet lol.

Youngest son invited me to go to the USC/CAL football game tomorrow night. (Actually hubby was first choice but he can't make it because of the time so I was the back up!) It should be fun but it will be a long day (and even longer Friday).  I'm not as young as I used to be lol.

College is going well for sailor son - he's booking his flight home for Christmas so we are excited for that.  He hasn't been home for the last 2 Christmas's so this is exciting.  Last year he was deployed with the Truman...It's nice now that he's in college 'cuz he gets a 3 week holiday break.  And his GF is coming from Michigan so we are excited to meet her too.

HI Michelle0206,

I haven't been on myself for quite some time. My son may or may not be graduating soon from prototype. Long story with plane changes already! He is Charleston and part of the delay was because they were evacuated. It's been hard for him he said, but he had some great times also. He is an ET also. He texts every now and then as he is not much of a talker. He said they turned up the fire hose to full blast and he's just trying to get done. Reality sets in because he will be leaving soon enough so he's nervous and excited. I send texts with no expectations, just to let him know I love him. I know it's hard, plus knowing they are going after this school is also something hard to accept. This group helps a lot!!!

COTwin, I meant to add I am so glad for your happy cancer story. That had to be a tough time for you. Yet another amazing thing about you. You amaze me.

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on October 26, 2016 at 9:57am

Hi All, I'm back from CO and the funeral was beautiful. She was a nun so it was joyful and warm. I'm glad I made it. COTwin, I would not have had time to visit anyway as it turns out. What a beautiful photo. CO is truly beautiful.

TXMom, so glad you heard from your sailor and will see him soon!! The spotty communication is a big part of the challenge of navy life.

PattiP, I hope your sailor has good luck finding a car. The logistics of cars, apartments, bills, and all the rest while at sea boggles my mind. My son has a wife; the singles have a way harder life to manage. Poor guy. But somehow these things always work themselves out

Lastly, welcome Mary m&m! I saw you on the Vinson page. They aren't as active as here but they are great when the ship is deployed. Also, be prepared for the nukes not to be liked very much on the ship. Just a fact, I'm afraid. The captain they had when my son had his first deployment was awesome. He sent frequent communication and appreciated his nukes. This new guy, not so much. But I'll leave it at that. But I"m here for you, Sea Sister!
