My son is graduating next month and I was needing information on hotels, transportation and access to the base.  I haven't received anything in the mail yet.  From a discussion on the Main Room, I was told there would be a packet regarding it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am new to the Navy stuff.  Thanks.

First Congratulation to your son on his achievement.    Enjoy your trip to Newport. Plan on going to Hi Moms event the night before the graduation and yes if you can get up early and watch them do their PT run in the morning.  What is your son's next step? Mine is a nuke and currently out on his first deployment on a sub.

your son should be getting a list of those attending and so that you will be pre approved to get on base. It has been 2 years since i was there. we stay in a quality inn in Middleton RI. It was not the greatest but since it was labor day weekend it fit the budget. Are you flying or driving to Newport?

Hi.  Thanks for the reply.  I am flying.  Only flights I see are to Providence, RI.  Should I get a rental or is there a shuttle to get to base?  Big cities scare me.  I will check out Middleton.  Not sure on his next steps--the group was deciding on who goes where.  Thank you so much and also Congrats on your son's achievements.  It's all really exciting but scary too.  Thanks again.

NewbieNavyMom-my son graduated Oct 6 and we were never sent any package about what to expect, where to stay etc.  Information was gleaned from son and the friends and family facebook page for his class 01-18. Your son will have to give certain information to the authorities for permission to come on base if you are not already military. All we did was show our ID or drivers license to the MP at the gate and he checked it against his list. Include ALL with your party who might be going (other family members as well as your own).  We got a hotel off base but just 5 miles or so from main gate. However there are certain times of the day when getting on or off base causes traffic delays in addition to the construction on the main bridge so we were actually late to hi-moms on Thursday night.  If he already has orders he will also have to "clean out his room" in Nimitz Hall- officers are not allowed in there so we had to take stuff before, and after hi-moms back to our hotel to hang onto for our son until he left the next day (it will vary depending on orders).

Thank you too for your reply.  No packet yet.  Family facebook page?  I'll have to check that out.  I was hoping on having a shuttle bring me into base but I will have to have a rental.  I am not military and I don't drive in cities, but it sound like I will have to get a rental.  It's too far to drive and too expensive for flights for everyone.  I will definitely try to make PT and Hi-Mom night.  Sounds like fun.  Thanks again.

there is 2 facebook pages to look for. one is officer training command newport. Here you will send pictures posted of the different classes. It was like finding waldo looking for your LO (loved one). The other is will look something like this Navy OCS Class 16-15 Friends & Family. The number is your LO's class number. I am still friends with some of the ladies i meet at the commissioning and other graduation from nuke schools. There is no shuttle that i know of. My daughter flew into Providence RI as that was the cheapest for her. My hubby and me made it a true vacation and flew into Boston before heading to newport. We then take the family back to Boston for a couple days and flew out there. Being from the west coast and kids all grown up i figured it might be the last time i have both kids with us on a vacation. Maybe you might be able to coordinate with OCS family arriving. Best of luck. Any question feel free to ask away and i will try to answer. I gleaned most of my info from other mom's on the friends and family page.

Hi NewbieNavyMom,

The closest airport to fly into is Providence.  You will probably need to rent a car, since I think the only shuttle to the base is only for military/arriving OCS candidates and not civilians.  You may be able to get a taxi/limo from the airport to Newport, but for the price of several taxi rides, renting a car would be cheaper for the weekend, I think.

Search for hotels in "Middletown, RI" which, if you look at a map, is actually closer to the base gates than Newport.  There are many chain hotels in Middletown, such as the Holiday Inn Express that we stayed at.  Newport itself is a tourist destination, so the hotels there are more "resort"-type and therefore more expensive, but since it is now the off-season, you may find some good deals on hotels throughout the area.

OCS families can also stay at the Navy Lodge right on the base, but reservations for that fill up quickly for graduation weekends.  Since the Lodge is only for military and their dependents, your son will need to be there to check you in with his military ID if you stay there.

Even if you are staying on the base, sometimes the Hi Moms reception is held off the base, so you will need some way to get there.  My son's Hi Moms was at a downtown Newport hotel.

If you have any free time, you'll want to drive the Ocean Drive around the peninsula south of Newport. Beautiful views!   Also take some tours of some of those "summer cottages" of the old rich in Newport, such as The Breakers, Marble House, etc.  (Folks like me call them mansions, not cottages! ha-ha)

As someone else posted, your son will need to provide in advance the names of everyone from his family attending.  Every adult in your vehicle will need to show photo ID at the gate, and the gate guard will check it with the list, so be prepared for that.

You can rent a car with a GPS system in it or use your phone app to guide you.  The traffic in Newport shouldn't be that bad in November, as compared to July!

Congratulations to your son!  Take plenty of tissues to graduation unless you are less emotional than most.  You'll be bursting with pride.   Just wait until you see your new officer in his dress blues!

Thank you so much for all the information.  It has been very helpful.  Taking the Ocean Drive sounds nice.  I'm definitely not the less emotional type--maybe two boxes of tissues :)  Thanks again.

tissues and some good water proof mascara.  I got some of my tears out by watching all the videos on the officer training newport command page.   I still get teary eyed watching them now.
