Hey everybody,

So my boyfriend's PIR is on May 4 (so excited!), and is staying in Great Lakes for A school. I am so curious how things are going to be after boot camp. Will he be able to have his cell phone? Can I go visit? Just so many questions. If somebody could provide some insight that would be great! We have been dating for 4 years so I really have his best interest at heart and am just trying to stay informed on these things! Thanks! :)

I'm in the same situation and I have the same questions. So far I've heard that they can have their phones (but they might not always be allowed to have it on them and time to make calls is limited) and you can visit after a certain amount of weeks.  Not positive though.  Looking forward to people responding to this as well :)

So glad to know I'm not alone! Nobody at home really understands the situation so it can be lonely! Yeah, I thought they could have their phones but then I read somewhere they can't. However, I hear so many different versions of everything I don't really know what's true.

Yes they have their cell phones with them, they just can't carry them on their person while they are in school, working, or on watch. Anytime they are in their barracks they can text/call you or whenever they are on liberty for the day. And whenever they have lunch breaks! Yes you will be able to visit! They gain more privileges the longer they are there for. I don't know how all the bases work but in Pensacola, after 5 weeks or so they can have liberty from Friday at 4/5 PM till Sunday at 10 PM. AKA, they don't have to be back at the base for the whole weekend. You can visit whenever you like. The first couple weeks thought they have to be back on base at 10PM every night. My boyfriend is in A school right now (His third week tomorrow) and we talk on the phone 3+ times a day, skype, text through out the day, and he gets to go off base after school/work hours. It's A LOT easier than boot camp for us girlfriends/fiances/wifes :)

Wow, that sounds a lot better! Thank you so much for replying! It's comforting to know we will have more communication and I can visit! :)

You might also hop on a group for his specific rate and see what they say about restrictions for A school or find a group for Great Lakes A school then you can see hold times (they do not start classes right away, usually there is a hold time while they wait to class up), you can ask about phases (what restrictions they have during what phase and how long each phase is), also be wary some A schools do require a chit for a girlfriend or fiancee to sign a sailor out for liberty, and he cant just sign out with a friend and then the two go their seperate ways they can get in a lot of trouble especially if something happens, its practice for when they go out in ports, very important to stick with the liberty buddy in ports. Communication is a lot better, its important to set up clear expectations of communication, one thing I see a lot of girls get upset about is that their sailor doesnt call all the time (which they cant) or doesnt call when they have down time. I told my husband I didnt care how early he called me but I wanted a call every morning when he got up or was about to go to class and a call before he went to sleep. At first he didnt want to wake me but he grew to love those calls the best typically bc I say funny stuff when I am woken in the middle of the night lol. Also, know some of the barracks do not have the best internet connections in fact they might have to pay for it. Idk for sure. but Skype was pretty much nonexistant in my husbands barrack, even when it rarely worked it froze and disconnected every few minutes.

There's no wi-fi in Pensacola. Luckily my sailor has an iphone so we can facetime without it.

there is in some place. My sailor's friend got it on his laptop in his barracks room so there is a way to do it. It sucks though. Idk what they did to get it or who had it but they did. and my sailor was in Pcola.

They can if they pay for it. Maybe his roommate had his own personal wi-fi.

yea. I know they have to pay for it. But its still an option and a lot of guys do get it.

My Husband has been at Great Lakes A School since the beginning of March. He had no hold time, but his rate is OS. The other rates there usually have some sort of waiting period, and the OS do too sometimes. It took him two weeks to get to phase two, which means you can stay out longer and wear civilian clothes. Then he got phase three three weeks after that. Which means you can stay out on weekends but must be back by Sunday evening.

Yes, he can have his phone. What eyeronics said about being able to talk to them every day is true. Just not while there at school etc. My husband and I were on the phone tonight until 2am, but he usually only talks until 12 because they have to wake up really early. He calls me at 5 to say good morning and then I dont hear from him again until his lunch at 12. And then not again until hes done with school at 4:30. You will have plenty of time to talk. If he has a laptop make sure you give it to him, he can use wifi at the pier and library. If he's lucky one of his room mates might even have there own internet.

TAKE HIS PHONE TO HIM AT GRADUATION! I can not stress this enough. When he graduates you will get to spend about an hour with him then he will go get his uniforms and move his things across the street. Give him his phone then. He will be able to call you/ even text you right when he gets over to his school. He'll spend two-three hours moving his stuff. You can walk around the NEX or whatever. I went across the street and looked around at the museum. After hes finished moving his stuff he'll come out of the gate right beside the museum, (if you give him his phone he can call you and tell you right before he starts walking out) and you can do whatever you want until nine/ten that night! I didnt know any of this stuff, so I was running around trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing.

I went up there last weekend and we got married. He is phase three so he stayed the weekend with me. But if your sailor is phase two he can put in a chit requesting that you be his liberty buddy and that he wants to stay over night with you. Depending on what ship he goes to it will or will not be approved. Otherwise yall will have to have a liberty buddy with you if he leaves base when you visit..

If you have any other questions you can always PM me! :)

Thanks a lot! I didn't know any of this stuff so it's really helpful!
