Mine is also on her first. Just send packages, letters and email often. When they can they respond and maybe have occasional ship to shore phone access. I send my daughter stuff for next holiday to decorate and/or share. Hope it helps!

spyder,

That's a cool idea to send holiday decorations ahead of time!!!  Wish I would have thought of that when my son was deployed!!!!

Thanks, I have sent her 2 packages, then she emails me to tell me a new address...Yikes, but she said she will get them. I long for the next ship to shore call. Good idea to send holiday things early. Thank you so much,

I agree with spyder catsmom. It is very hard wondering where she is all the time. Mine is on the USS Tortuga and the they have a facebook site which helps some.

Yes that does help. It is just such an adjustment going from talking almost everyday to hearing from her so seldom. Thank you for your help.

Catsmom,

Like blm said, most Navy ships now have facebook pages so you can sometimes see pictures of sailors onboard.  Also make sure you get the name and email address of the ship's ombudsman and establish contact with them.  When my son was on a deployment the ship put out a monthly e-newsletter that helps keep you informed.  Always remember the opsec rules when your sailor is on deployment - you can never give out ship's movement information, but if the ship announces where it has been then it's ok to tell about that.  Keeping in touch anyway you can helps make the time go by quickly.

Yes I know not to give any info, my girl is in intel, so am very aware of what to say and not to say, but thanks for the info, how do you get in touch with the ombudsman? I have recived a few email info from the ship. I will do that. I am so happy to be able to have contact with all of you, helps to have people that understand.

Catsmom,

My son is in Intel also.  What does your daughter do?

She is a CTT she says she is working 14hr shifts 7 days a week, I know they are all very busy. It has helped me so much with all of your support, my friends as loving as they are just can not understand how I feel. I feel so welcome here, Thank you so much!

Catsmom,

Stop in on the group page here, there are lots of moms who can help hold you up and get you through this deployment.  My son is an IS.

Hi Catsmom, my daughter is also on the USS Harry S. Truman. This is her first deployment as well. She also emails me whenever possible. According to my daughter she is kept busy and they work 7 days a week. She signed up for a couple of college courses to take while on deployment.

Yeah, That's what Crystal tells me, 14 hr. shifts 7 days a week, I don't know how they do it. Hope it makes the time go by quickly for them.
