Hey SallyCG! My son's original ship date was late Oct, moved up to late July..Mon @10am the re router called and said he had to report by 930 the following morning!! Feel like we wasted the whole day scrambling to make sure he was ready to go, saying good bye to friends/family and making the most of dinner (rather felt like a last supper). He's my youngest; I am SOOO proud but miss him desperately. Was doing good until we received his box yesterday. That critter sent everything back! even his…

My son left yesterday and arrived today. He is my second son to go through Navy boot camp. His older brother left almost 11 months ago to the day, didn't even give me a year to recover. It is hard to let them go. They are in good hands and well cared for. Remember no news is good news and send lots of letters of encouragement.

Tomorrow marks 5 years since I had to say see ya later to my Sailor!! (The day before his brother's birthday too!!) It seems like forever ago and yesterday all at the same time. You are in a good place here and there are a ton of resources if it ever begins to get too overwhelming. Read the files on P-days and first contact--box, form letter, phone calls so you are prepared for those first few weeks. Welcome to the family and remember No News is Good News!! (It's hard but true)

Yes, and isn't it ironic that he's FLYING out to join the Navy? Makes you think it's an air AND a sea operation haha. We expected late August last year, but we got mid-April all of a sudden, like you with just a week's notice. Our daughter had finished college but wasn't finding work, and now the Navy is SO right for her. She's a "nuke", which involves about 18 months of training at the base in SC.
She's happy and feels good about herself and her mission. You are in for a lot of ups and downs, but Basic was the hardest for us. Recruits can't communicate except in limited ways. Be sure to read the information on these pages, it's very helpful. You will receive a scripted phone call soon after your son arrives at Great Lakes, and a box with all his stuff shortly thereafter. It will arrive, don't worry. The call will leave you wanting more. They are well taken care of there, though--in retrospect, I see that. After Basic, though, they can have their phones back and can communicate much more freely, depending on their rate (job). Welcome!
