Thanks for the great information. Since we are over 700 miles away, I don't think he will be coming home until after A school! That's okay though. Since his dad and I are both teachers, we can go visit him this summer without a problem.

The liberty mile limit for A school is usually 300 miles. They can request an "out of bounds" chit for a long weekend once they have phased up, but that very much depends on the individual school whether it would be approved or not.

Some bases allow the sailors to have cars, it would depend on that base and when they allow it.

Will his A school be close to home? They are allowed on liberty to travel up to a certain distance away from base, he will know what his base allows when he gets there. And if he has a weekend that he doesnt have watch, and you are within the travel limits he can go home, if you are outside the limits, he would have to take leave, and get it approved before he went home.

They earn most privledges through phases, phase I is very similar to boot camp, they muster it seemed like 10 times a day, and have to be in their barracks by 10pm. About 2 weeks in phase I he should move on to phase II, civilian clothes allowed, can go off base but not overnite, curfew may be later for those with liberty.

Phase III, is mostly about liberty, and they can stay overnite, and he will know if he is able to or not. they keep them pretty busy in A school, with PT, watch, classes. And all liberties can be taken away at any time, due to many things, not unheard of for the entire base to stop liberty due to some sailors having too much fun and getting caught. Like underage drinking. Each bases liberties are a little different, he will be able to tell you the specifics of his base. Be patient when he gets to A school, it takes them a while to navigate around and know where everything is, coming off boot camp where they were told how to breath, eat, sleep, its a big change for them.
