I stole this idea from PIR 12/22/10 because I thought it was a good idea :)

List where your child/husband/bf/gf will attend A school and what their rate (job) will be. Spell it out so some of us that aren't up on all of the Navy lingo will understand what it stands for. E.g. - IT is Information Systems Technology.

Remember to only list your loved ones initials, not their full name for security reasons.

Has he left for basic yet? If not you can look at his contract, it will have his rate on it. I don't know anything about nukes, mine is IT, sorry :) Susan
Yes, he's in BC now, graduates 12/17
My son is also on Ship 3 Div 022 :-)
He qualified for the Nuclear Propulsion...uh, department (not sure what you'd call it).
He will be a nuke MM, EM, or ET. That's assigned sometime in bootcamp (I think, maybe right when they get to SC). Specific rate for nukes isn't in the contract, but is assigned per needs of the Navy. Nukes can go to a sub without going to sub school, because their training is so long and they're pretty dang smart, they just don't need the extra training. LOL, according to my nuke, anyway! He could be wrong.

They do have to do qualifications once they get on the boat.

I was a surface ET and was very disappointed when my nephew chose EM instead.
OK, I saw in your earlier note that ET is an electronics technician. What does MM and EM stand for?
BESS? Is that the sub school?
MM Machinest Mate
EM - Electricians Mate
BESS - Basic Enlistement Sub School

When I spoke with S last Saturday, he said that he will be meeting with the Nuke Coordinator this week to choose his job

In regards to lenght of time all enlistments are to total of 8 yr commitment (2, 3, 4 years in reserves) for the Nuke Rate, Recuits have to sign a 4 year contract, with a 2 year contract - and once in the fleet will have the option to reenlist for another 2 years.

AntiM - fingers crossed here that the ET rate is available and choosen ......
Fingers crossed for ET also, after all, ETs are the coolest rate ever! LOL.

That extra two years was mandatory at one time, even though it said optional. The wording of the contract is tricky, and ever-changing.

Last time I spoke to nephew, he said the re-enlistment bonus was up to $75K for nukes, and he hoped to re-up in a tax free zone.
OK...This one is not yet out there! "E" will attend A school in Pensacola, FL his job is AO (Aviation Ordnanceman) ...which in civilian terms is....Aricraft armament (weapons) Specialist on Navy Aircraft, in addition the AO's are qualified and may also volunteer for programs such as SEAL Team or EOD (Special Warfare Program)!
J is going to Gulfport MS. He is a BU, they call them SeaBees (CB: Construction Battalions). The CB/SeaBee history is super cool to read.
K will be attending A school in Great Lakes - MM - Machinists Mate.....
I think a lot of our SR's are heading for Pensacola or staying at GL! Kind of great they meet in BC and then head to A school knowing on another. I haven't seen anyone else post their SR is headed to Groton except me!
D has become friends with a guy in his division who has the same exact rate as him so they will be in A school together and taking the same classes! He thinks it's pretty cool. Susan
