This may seem trivial but I have never purchased a calling card. What is the best one to get my recruit for use during boot camp? She will likely only call me or her sister in NC while in Great Lakes. Thanks for the guidance.

I'm curious about this too. I'd love to get my son a calling card, but I haven't seen them anywhere. Where are these found now?

Calling cards can be found at many retail stores, Walmart, Walgreens, KMart.....

Your recruit will received one in his/her ditty bag or black backpack, so don't worry if s/he did not take one to BC; s/he will be able to make calls when the RDC schedules calls.

See Phone Cards and Phone Calls.

Ahhh, THANK YOU!! My husband is still totally confused, keeps referring to his son's boot camp during the Army, TOTALLY different!!  :-) They kept their cell phones in and office and were awarded calls to home.

You are very welcome.

Yes, boot camp in the Army is totally different from the RTC. If he is interested, have your husband join N4M and check out Dads on Moms.....com or join http://www.navydads.com/. There is also PROUD NAVY DADS on N4M, but it is not very active. He's also welcome to check out Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones).

He joined in 2011, and has been discharged.  But thank you will share the information.  :-) Blessings and have a great day!!

Thank you so much!!

I found mine at our local grocery store. It was an AT&T one. They have different $ increments.

I knew nothing about calling cards either and ended up getting him one from Penny Talk at the drug store. I liked it because I could set it up to automatically replenish in case it ran over. When you read the fine print on the calling cards you realize that they charge you minutes for using it each time, they also charge additional minutes for calling from a pay phone. This is in addition to the minutes actually used so they run up pretty quickly. I also made him try it out before he left so we were sure it worked and he knew how to use it. You don't want to waste any precious phone time.

My son said he got one while at boot camp with 300 minutes on it.

Be careful when buying the calling card, we went to Walmart and they had to help us find specifically the correct one.  There were a lot of cards for go phones and tract phones.  It took us 20 min to find!  They are pretty cheap though, $10 for 150 min!

We got our SR one just in case in Wal-mart.  They are with the other gift cards in a display near the front. It's AT&T and can be reloaded as needed. Of course I had to show him how to use it, since he's never used anything but his cell phone!

I wasn't aware they needed a calling card until I read it here.. Unfortunately, my son left for Boot Camp last week.  Is this something I can include in a letter?  I certainly don't want to cause trouble for him, but I'd like for him to have what he needs.
