HI!

I want to jump in and start posting. My son left Indy for boot camp on Tues. 8/28/12. I got his I am here, I am fine call on Wed. night. As of now impatiently wait for any other information from him or about him. I know his personal box will come soon. How did others react to opening it? I know it is going to restart the tears (they haven't really stopped). Anyway, looking to chat with others that are in a similar position, as I don't feel I have anyone close that understands as I have been told it is no different than a child going off to college. I just feel that is a poor comparison, as the communication is cut off and I know my child is not out partying and running home every 2 days when they are home sick.

Hi corbie and welcome :)

You will find lots of ladies in the same "boat" in the groups here. You may want to join http://www.navyformoms.com/group/newmomsstophere    there is a lot of information on that group.   Chat is also a fun way to get to know some people as well as get questions answered fast.

Hi there. My son left on 8/28 too. I received his box yesterday..i was overwhelmed with emotion. Still waiting for his form letter. Did you get his address from his recruiter?

lemonelephant: His box came yesterday afternoon, along with mixed emotions. Made me miss him even more, but it was also  a step closer for him to complete this new part of his life. I guess the letter comes within 2 to 3 weeks from what I have been told. His recruiter stated it will come in the mail within a few weeks of him leaving as that is information that he doesn't have. It's nice to meet a mom in the same steps of this. :)

Welcome Corbie, Everyone on here has been in your position, we all get it, and you are 100% right, its nothing like going off to college. "Even people in your own family wont get it, they arent the mom or parent of a sailor. Keep coming to the site and ask questions. Lemonelephant has given you tons of groups to join in with, the more info the better and by the time you get to your sons PIR, you will be able to talk  Navy, and sometimes we as moms even know more than our sailors.

Hi!  My daughter left 8/29 for BC.....I rec'd 'the box' a couple of days ago.  My recruit (before she left) gave me strict instructions not to open it and just place it in her room.  I think she felt that it would be very traumatic for me.  I left it on the kitchen table for an entire day and just kept circling it like it was my prey...lol.  But I did place it in her room unopened as she had requested. And Im really glad she asked that I not open it!
