Just wanted to get some feedback as to the best way to address and ship care packages. I've send a couple, but my son hasn't gotten them. He mentioned that I should sent it Registered Mail. Does that really make a difference?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Birdie

My daughter is on the Lincoln attached to a squadron and she just now received her first care package, The one she received was mailed in one of those "if it fits it ships" boxes about 2 weeks ago. I mailed a box to her on Sept. 7th she still hasn't received that one. I'm not sure if it the way we're mailing the care packages or just the fact that they are on the move all of the time and our packages have to catch up to them. When did you mail your son the care packages? Good luck!
Stacey (Patriot)
I mailed one a couple of weeks ago and another one last week. At first, I thought that maybe I'd been given the incorrect address. My son's Master Chief called me yesterday and verified that I had the correct address. He said that sometimes the mail has to play catch-up and other times they send it ahead of the ship. He may have a few packages waiting in Bahrain. :)
Wow, my son is deployed also on the USS Abraham Lincoln. I sent 2 packages about 3 weeks ago. He finally received them. He said they are busy transiting from one place to the other and that is why it is possibly taking so long. I hope we are putting the correct address on there so it does not delay the packages.
Hi Lisa,

Did your son receive those today? My son is also VFA-34 an AO in the night shift crew. I sent 2 boxes on Sept 9 and still nothing. I sent another one today. Hopefully it will get there soon. : )
Hi Lilly,
He received them last Thursday or Friday. I sent another one off today. Hopefully your son gets it soon.
hi birdie,

i asked this on my sailor's squadron's fb page and this is what the skipper said:
Everyone, Mail is up and running as normally as it can when you are moving half-way across the globe. Anytime we have CODs (C-2 aircraft that delivery people and cargo) running, they bring aboard and take off mail. While we transit, they have to continually shift the locations they operate from and this causes delays in both incoming and outgoing mail. Once we get on station in the 5th Fleet, they will operate on a more permanent basis out of Bahrain and the mail delivery should be a little more consistent. My experience is that mail and packages coming from the west coast take on average 7-10 days to make it to the ship. Right now, our mail is chasing us and it may take a few weeks to get everything delivered, so I hope you can be patient.

The unit number and FPO AP with Zip are the most critical part. That is how they route it to us directly. If you send it with a USS Abraham Lincoln label, it may confuse the system slightly and sometimes the postal clerks, so I'd avoid doing that, though in theory it will eventually arrive.

Sorry for the long drawn-out reply, but this is an EXCELLENT question Darlene and I'm sorry that I didn't address it earlier. Thanks and please help get this info out to everyone else. Skipper
Birdie, my daughter is on the Abe Lincoln, I have sent her out 2 packages since just before they deployed. They are taking about 3 weeks going parcel post. They do say they get there alittle faster if you send them priority. The thing is the post office may get them to where the military sorts and distribution their mail faster, but once thier they have to go through the military system which is where the package gets slowed down. Also another factor is that it depends on where the ships locationed at the time. But in my opinion it doesn't matter how long it takes, your sailor will appreciate any thing you send them.
Thanks for the info. I figured if I send one package per week, once they start arriving, he should be squared away with junk food and candy for quite some time. Of course, I told him that he absolutely has to share with those in his squadron, or I'll cut him off. Hee Hee Hee.
4 packages from amazon.com arrived for my sailor today. i ordered them september 13 and september 17 and they were shipped priority mail. there is hope!
Hi All....

I sent 2 large flat rate boxes and it took 3 weeks to reach my sailor.....I shipped some small fruit cocktail packages that exploded and got moldly, but everyting else I sent he was happy with....it is always a challenge to find the "right" stuff......
Andrea

Just curious what was the fruit cocktail packaged in, a can or the small plastic containers? My daughter has been very fortunate she had received her packages in a timely manner. She even ordered some chef pants and she was going to have them shipped to me. But, she somehow messed up the address, and it had our address but, her zip code and somehow some way it was delivered to her on the ship.

I just cannot get over the fact that it was able to be delivered and not returned.
That's funny. My son got package #2 out of 5. That's it. Hope the other ones make it to him soon.
