My daughter is in RCU for stress fractures in both shins. After talking to her this past Sunday, she said she was given the option to finish BC  while in RCU. Does anyone have info on what happens, does she have to be FFD before completing tasks, does she still have PIR? I am all for her shaving off time being there even if it means sacrificing PIR! They get so sad, depressed, and pessimistic while in RCU. I just want my bubbly, goofy daughter back. I know they are in good hands there but it seems to suck the life out of them. Any info would be helpful, cause I have searched for the answers everywhere :) Prayers to all the SR's and Sailors out there!

I don't have an answer to the RCU question, I just want to say - keep a positive attitude and keep those prayer coming. She will pass and move on to her A School!
The bubbly, goofy daughter will be way different (if she is anything like my son)! He changed so much - all for the better!
Thank you US Navy!!
My prayers to all of you and your sr's.

Thank you AngelW, I have been trying to stay positive, I just can't wait to get a call from her where I don't have to try to get her to stop crying for 10 minutes.  She will make it and I told her in a few months she wont even think about this anymore.  Yes, she seems to have changed tremendously since mid July! We are so proud, congrats to your son, Im assuming he made it through RCU and on to A school :)

Yes, he did make it - and I am sure he doesn't even think about it anymore.  I'm telling you - it is harder on us!  He loves being in the Navy, he said this is where he is meant to be.

I wish you and your daughter all the best.  I am sorry she calls you crying.  Maybe she thinks she is letting you down (just thinking like my son did)  Let her know she WILL make it.  These kids are amazing!

Hi Andikeesi,

My son also graduated right from RCU after being there for several weeks due to stress fractures in both legs.  When offered this option, he jumped at it (so to speak!), as he was REALLY ready to get out of boot and move on.  They do have to be fit for duty to finish up whatever they hadn't gotten to before going into RCU.  They just put them into a division for whatever that is (Battlestations, etc.).  Unfortunately, they do forfeit PIR if choosing this route, but we told our son whatever he chose, we would support him 110%.  He went on to Submarine School, and we were able to attend his graduation from Basic Sub School, and now he's on to his A School.  We will attend that graduation (which I truly feel is the most significant, as it's a culmination of ALL they've done since the day they arrived in Great Lakes) in January.  My son is similar to Angels - absolutely LOVES being in the Navy, and all the changes I've seen in him have been VERY positive.  He truly has found his place in this world, and I couldn't be happier for him or prouder of him!  All the best to you and your daughter, and prayers will be lifted for you.  This extended version of boot camp due to a stint in RCU, WILL soon become a distant memory!

andikeesi..Our story is very similar to Patrick'smom and Navyknit22. .Our son was able to finish BC while in RCU. Yes, they have to be declared fit for duty. They will have to pass the PFT if that is the correct acronym. Ours went through Battlestations and everything. There was not a PIR, but he was just glad to be finished. He did move in to THU on medical hold for another 4 weeks to continue to heal. He was there from Oct last year until Dec 21. He went into THU from Dec 21 to Mid-End of Jan. He then transferred to Spec Ops Prep where he re injured is leg and was put back on Medical Hold until the last of April. He was finally released to go to A school the first week of May. He is now in Bahrain and doing well, but it was a long, heartbreaking road for all of us to travel. Oh, he had a complete fracture of his left fibula. It will be amazing how fast they are able to put RCU behind them and move on to the next adventure. Wishing you and your daughter all the best.  Keeping you in our prayers.

How do you get them the vitamin D and calcium.  I told my daughter who is in RCU due to an ankle fracture and she is really sad being there, to drink at least 4 glasses of milk a day, every little bit helps.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

My daughter has been in RCU with stress fractures since August. I'm hoping they know each other. The first few calls I got were full of tears but she is in much better spirits now. Hang in there as you will both make it. Send lots of letters of encouragement!

navyknit22... You know it was one of the most difficult times I have had to endure, but he became a stronger person because of it. He is 25, but it did not help any knowing that he was older and an adult. He was still my child. Just tell him not to rush recovery. Ours was so ready to get out of RCU, that he pushed himself too hard. He was not really physically ready to move on, but he did it anyway. Then, he did it again while on medical hold. He lost his contract for Spec Ops with the second injury,  but he is now a Master of Arms. Not quite the same, but it does provide some of the physical aspects he was looking for. Wishing the best for you and your son. Keep in touch.

my son had that option while in RCU and he said UH NOOOOO I WANT A PIR... he was only 2 weeks away from PIR when he had stress fractures in his heels.... he ended up going FFD and there were no divisions that close to PIR so he joined a division that was 4 weeks away, did a few things over again but had fun.. haha he spent 16 weeks up in RTC and that being boot is really only supposed to be 8 wks he said He had so much fun he did it twice hahahahahha... hugs to you and your SR!!!!

PATRICKS MOM..... HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU?????? hows your SAILOR??????

Hi Barb!!!  I'm doing GREAT, how are you?!!!

Patrick is also doing very well, and is in Groton, Connecticut at submarine school.  He's completed 3 courses there, and is now finally onto his A School (also there in Connecticut).  He was home a few weeks ago for his first leave in 9 long months!  It was like heaven having him home - I loved every second of it, even though my time with him was brief due to having to share him with his Dad, Stepmom, Sister and Girlfriend!  He'll also be coming home for Christmas as he's still in A School, graduating 1/18.  Needless to say I'm VERY HAPPY about that, as who knows what the next 4 years will bring as far as when he'll be able to come home.

How is your son doing?  So happy and proud of both of them for enduring their time in RCU and growing stronger for it!

Hi Barby and Karen,

I do check back here every now and then, and am so happy to see both of you have posted here.  Glad to hear that the boys are doing well.

Barby...   Is Andrew still in SD?  Mine chose SD as his duty station.  He graduates Oct. 2nd from San Antonio, and will drive with us home, then go to Camp P for FMTB training before being stationed at the Naval Hospital in SD.

Karen...   Glad to hear that Patrick is doing well.  My second son is still on course to leave for Boot Camp in mid-February, so it's going to be really strange with both boys in the Navy.  He will probably be in Groton for sub school and wherever Nuke school is, so maybe we'll be visiting there sometime too...

Hope both of you are doing well too.  Miss you guys!!!

HUGS!!

-Janet

Hi Janet, it's wonderful to "see" you here!!!  So happy to hear that Garrett is doing so well and will soon be stationed in San Diego.  I'm figuring that's still a bit of a drive for you from your home in California, but it is a doable one for a long weekend, isn't it?

Patrick has put in his top 3 requests on where to be stationed.  #1 is San Diego, #2 Hawaii, and #3 Groton where he currently is.  I'm really hoping he gets one of his 1st 2 choices, as both those bases have ships as well as subs, whereas Groton is only submarines.  I just think it will be more exciting with more going on in California or Hawaii, however frequent trips would obviously be out.  I've been blessed to visit him in Groton 3 times since he's been there.  You can bet if he gets stationed in Hawaii though, that I'll be looking up BoomMom on a visit there!!!

Barby, I didn't know Andrew (hoping I'm remembering your son's name right), was in San Diego.  Wouldn't it just be a hoot if they all ended up there together?!

It's so nice to see both of you veteran RCU moms here to encourage those with kids still in RCU.  We, as well as our boys of course, are certainly a testimony that RCU WILL become a distant memory once our kids move on to the next phase in the Navy!

With love and hugs to you both!  Karen
