OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

FMLA covered leave for attending 'military-sponsored functions'

Hi Everyone,

I know the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows leave for military family members to attend 'military-sponsored functions' (in addition so several other reasons).  Does anyone know if a homecoming from a deployment count as a 'military-sponsored function' that would qualify under FMLA?

My son is also on the Princeton,if you find out about homecoming,I would like to know.

Hello Mrs.Rec. I'm not exactly sure what his postion is,He is in a room with computers . And what postion does your son? I did hear from him ,and said they had some rough seas,but all is good

It's great that you were able to hear from your son.  I'm hoping to hear from my son at some point.  I get anxious not being in communication with him.  

My son is a Gunner's Mate (working with weapons), so likely not in the same area as your son.  His name is Kalani, however I think he told me that his shipmates nicknamed him "Nacho" - don't know why. :) 

So I did a little research and I was able to answer my own question.  :)  

In case anyone else is interested in this information, I've attached an information sheet provided by the US Department of Labor regarding FMLA leave for family members of military personnel.  

"Qualifying exigencies" are qualifying reason for this leave - here's a link regarding what a 'qualifying exigency' is:

A homecoming ceremony (among other reasons) is considered a qualifying exigency under this FMLA rule, so if a family member qualifies for FMLA and needs to attend a homecoming ceremony, it's a job-protected leave.

Hope this can help some people.  It definitely makes me feel better about taking time off so I can attend my son's homecoming (whenever that may be).


Oh thank you for doing the research on this and posting the link, it's taken a lot of anxiety out of upcoming events with my boy I was afraid of missing!
