It's been almost 2 years since my sons PIR but it was like Sailorlady said, they leave early the next morning from base, but their flight could actually be later in the day.  My sons was at 7:30am.  We did get to go through security with him and go to his gate.  The USO is great.  The Sailors have to check in at the USO, they get their airline tickets and baggage tags, then you go down to the ticket counter and he shows his plane ticket and everyone's ID for the gate passes.  I thoroughly enjoyed going to the airport, watching all those new Sailors and their excitement.  And being there at 3:30am you miss all that horrible Chicago traffic!

Rest assured, there are lots of Nuke Moms on here, in many stages of the pipeline, that can help with all your questions.  You will have many!

Glad to have found this group.  My son has a PIR date of 3/1/13 then goes on to Nuke School.  The more information we can get, the better!

I guess I need to figure out how to get out of this group. Sadly, my son cannot go into the Nuclear program due to his color blindness. Guess we should have researched more and wish we would have had a more knowledgeable recruiter. He went to MEPS yesterday and found out what areas he is eligible for. He had a 93 on ASVAB and is a 4.0 honor student. He already has a full ride scholarship for college, but Navy Nuclear was his dream. Darn it! Now he has signed up to wait for openings in CTN (1st choice) or CTR. Please forgive me if I worded anything wrong.

Kristy sorry to hear that, the nuclear program has many other requirements besides just the academic requirement.  If you see the list of members on the Nuke Moms page, above that there is a link called Leave Group.

By the way, your son is under no obligation to join the Navy now if as it turns out, he can no longer enlist as nuke.  If he has a full scholarship to college maybe he should go to college after all.  He can just pull out of the DEP program if he wants and use "going to college" as his reason, he just needs to write a letter to the recruiter.  If he wants to be a CTN more power too him.
