Okay, so we have a sort of complicated moving situaton, and I want to know if anyone can help.

My fiance is peacing out from his ship April 1st, and we're getting married April 2nd (for planning our wedding a year and half ahead, its all worked out pretty awesome). And he needs to be in Norfolk for his new ship May 1st. Now, I know that since he got his orders as a single sailor, the Navy will only help him move, which is no big deal. But when we get to Norfolk, what do we do? What do we need to know to get me on there as a dependent, enroll me on his insurance, get DoD stickers for my car, and whatever else there is that we need to do. If I am missing anything, please, by all means, clue me in, because I don't want to be a year or two into our marriage and find out that we missed a step.

If for whatever reason this can't be answered on the message board because of security reasons, that's fine. Just message me whatever it is I need to know. I'm only asking on here as a last resort because everytime I ask him I get the typical guy response of a shrug and we'll figure it out later. But I'm already crazy stressed enough with the wedding that for peace of mind I just need to have some kind of answer,

Thanks ladies (:

Let's see, I think the first step is to get you the dependent ID.  With that, you can get the stickers for your car yourself.  I can't remember where to go for insurance, what the building would be called, since my husband was the one to research.

Try coordinates 36.937017,-76.317441 It's the corner of Hampton Blvd and Seebee Rd.  I think that might be where you get the stickers for your car.

Oh, and I forgot.  Get a power of attorney.  It's more for on-deployment matters, but no reason to wait.

When he checks into his command, he needs to go add you to his service record, enroll you in DEERs, and then you get your ID card.  He will need the marriage certificate (get a lot of certified copies just in case), an original of your birth certificate (order one now), your SSN (don't worry about the name change until later), and you will need your driver's license.  Again, the name change is a minor matter immediately. He will not be eligible for the ten days of house hunting leave because his orders are single.  They aren't expecting a married sailor, so he should request a sponsor, and let them know he is married, so they can pave the way for a little time off to get you taken care of.

That is done at PSD, so he can ask about filing for BAH at that time. Takes a few pay cycles to kick in, you'd better start saving for a deposit and a month or more of rent.  Cut back on the wedding expenses if you must, but have funds in hand for the move.

The car will need proof of insurance and registration to get a sticker.

I know at school commands they sit the sailors down and do all that in one shot, including the health and dental. However, I know some places you have to go to the Tricare office on base in some places to sign up.  You can look up Tricare online and decide between Standard or Prime coverage now.
