My son is leaving on August 24th for bootcamp. He was accepted into the Nuke Program, has been in DEP since December 2nd and was given a sign on bonus. He has always been very athletic, captain of the Basketball, Football and Baseball teams or 2 years...6'5" and about 215. (Don't know if that's relevant) Before seriously thinking of the Navy he wanted to be a Sports Physical Therapist and initially was conidering ROTC . Aways wanted to do something athletic with his life, not sit behind a desk. He loves Math & Science and in my heart I know he would do very well in the Nuke program.
He scored very high on the ASVAB and was offered a job while at MEPS, which was very exciting to him. Of course I liked this becuase if he's in the Nuke Program he would be relatively safe. He recently went to a Chief's re-enlistment and met some other DEP guys that were in Spec-Ops...now he's wanting to change jobs.
My husband was in the Navy 20 years ago and is not wanting him to ask his recruiter about the possibility because it will look like he can't make a decision. My hubby also says once you sign on the line your stuck in that job. One of the DEP guys told him that until he leaves he can still change jobs.
It's Saturday and Daniel (my son) cannot call his recruiter today so I'm hoping to find out if it's even possible to change jobs after swearing ... Also they must really want him in the Nuke program if they gave a sign on bonus??? Or am I thinking too much? Can anyone help answer these questions?
Thank you sooooo much!
