I hate to stereotype and my apologies if I offended you. I’m more conservative and my husband and kids as well. My siblings and parents are more liberal and My experience has been that those are the people that are against someone enlisting . I’m not sure why . Thank you fir your service :) nice to meet you

I went into the Navy as a liberal, ages ago, and have found that compared to the other branches, many sailors come out as even more liberal after service. People hear I am a vet and makes assumptions about my views, most of the time they are very, very wrong.

This is so comforting to read ! My daughter just left for BC Wednesday . My heart breaks too but we are so proud of her . Much of my family are raging libs ! I got the looks and sympathy as if she has done something so wrong ! It really irritates me but I’m glad I’m not alone in this !

Thanks, Baptistmama, Regina126, and KimZ!

I also live in a very liberal part of the USA, and more often than not I have people respond to me with what I call the "pained face" when I tell them that my son chose to enlist in the Navy rather than continue with college (which wasn't the right fit for him). They mean well, but they can't seem to wrap their head around the choice that he has made, and how proud we are of him, even as our heart is breaking at the thought of him…

Baptistmama and KimZ - best of luck to you and your soon-to-be sailors as you finish up your BC journey. :)

This site & these women are a God send. I just saw my son and we talked & even talking to him makes me emotional. As much as I have mixed feelings about his decision it is for the best. So @Velvetenor I definitely understand your feelings. It is not the same as college. I just told my son the hardest part will be not being able to talk or text him every day in the beginning. Thank goodness I have you all to lean on. I hope that our boys are in the same division.

Well said @Baptistmama. Yes @Velvetnor I live a liberal part of the country where moms say "How do you fell about that? (my son choosing to serve!)"
Hi Adele and Regina126, I am so with you on this, too! My son leaves on Dec 4th, and I also find myself tearing up randomly, and also waking up in the middle of the night worrying about him, and he hasn't even left, yet!! We are having an Open House on Nov 30th for everyone to come and wish him well, and I have already asked my sisters to help try and keep me sane on that day, but I will likely have a garbage can full of used tissues at the end of the day from all the…

Baker1013 - I also plan to do what you suggested and have everyone write some encouraging words on cards so that I can send him a couple each day while he is in BC. I hope that will help him to stay strong while he is there.

I try to share my feelings about my son's decision to join the Navy with others, but I find that no one really understands how I am feeling about it. It is not like sending your kids to college, but that is what a lot of people equate it to.

This site has really been so helpful, and thank you to everyone who contributes, here!

As I say it’s a happy but sad feeling. Once they are gone it’s a wave a new feelings. My son gave me giant dog with his shirt to wear. He called it a seat filler. If you have to go somewhere and cry and get it out do it!

Regina126, when we had the "ship out" party for my SR, we bought a box of blank note cards and I put a good friend in charge of going around to each of the attendees to write some words of encouragement to him. I had them put their return address on it but left the front blank until I got his form letter. At the time he was like "don't send ALL OF THOSE to me! I don't want to be made fun of." I am so happy we did this because we have since heard from him that he LOVES getting mail.

Just a thought for you.
