OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I joined this board when my 19 yo was at MEPS and officially signed up back in July. I haven't been active on here because he said he was leaving in December and it seemed so far away.

This afternoon he told me that he might be leaving early, doesn't know when yet. Many people are in the same boat (pardon the pun). So now I'm scrambling to figure out what I need to do, if anything, and get acquainted with others here.

It's hard hearing moms whine about their kids going away to college. I don't say anything to them but think "yeah, your kid will come back for Thanksgiving, Christmas, possibly flunk out and come home permanently!". Mine will be gone for a heck of a lot longer than that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm completely behind him and his decision to join up. I'm just going to miss him. The whole military world is so strange to me...college life is not.

Trying hard to keep it together,

Joy

My son wasn't supposed to leave until December and then a call came out of the blue that said "hey can you leave next week". He left 9/26. It was fast and sudden. I had no clue to this wonderful site until after he was gone. My son actually went away to college for 1 semester and didn't like it. I thought that was hard but boot camp is harder. Atleast I had contact then. Boot camp there's absolutely no contact and its driving me crazy. Good luck and cherish every single day until he leaves

You may wish to join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in December, to connect with others with loved ones who may be leaving the same day/week and may have PIR with your Future Sailor.  Be sure to check out the discussion, Things to Do in the Last Month Before Your Future Sailor Leaves for.... I also suggest you join New Members Stop Here and check out the Pages and Discussions there.  If he leaves in November instead, you can join the group, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in November

Your future Sailor may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there.
