My sailor was just dropped from the hospital corpsman training program for cheating on the final exam. Just a word to all, if your recruit/sailor is talking about cheating, let them know they can even be tossed out of the navy, in addition to being dropped from a training program, for this.
meanwhile, they’re looking for a new job- and they’re not being offered another school, but instead jobs with “on the job training”. If you’re familiar with any of the choices they gave us, your input is welcome!
I have checked the ratings cards, which are super helpful, but my sailor is getting a lot of input from their classmates, which might or might or might not be useful. The positions are:
ic/sg, SR/5yo, AZ/5yo, bm/5yo, e/pact, s/pact
I also don’t know what 5yo (5 years only..) or pact mean....
Brienne - I am not as familiar with PACT but I believe it is more of a "jack of all trades" type situation where they learn several jobs and then are able to decide on something later.
Please feel free to join the BEYOND BC group and ask your questions there, as you might have a greater response than posting in the General Discussion area. Beyond BC - Navy For Moms (ning.com)
Thanks so much Chipmunk- I’ll head over to that subgroup!
You are welcome! Hopefully, it will also help you to get some more eyes on your post here.
IC is interior communications. There is an A school for this, I'm surprised it is an offer. From experience, they at least need the basic ATT electronic prep training. I need to look it up. So, they'd work on alarms, ship interior comms, entertainment systems and such.
There is no SG, but there is STG, which is a sonar tech on surface ships. Again, an A school is common with that one. Interesting.
AZ is Aviation Admin, basically a yeoman for an air squadron or wing. The 5 year is probably the minimum contract. He'd deploy with the birds, could be overseas, could be carriers.
BM is Boatswain Mate, the oldest rating in the Navy. That's deck work. Lots of people make fun of BM, but it has a long honorable history. He'd be working his ass off.
PACT is Professional Apprentice Career Tracks. He'd be assigned to a department and do whatever jobs are needed. E-pact is engineering, and not the tidy at a desk kind. S-pact is seaman, deck, he'd be working with the BMs. While it sounds good that they get to try for a rating after a year or so, they can only try for certain ones. Might even pull an A school. However, given the choices, take a rating! Always take a rating! A PACT cannot make E-4 unless they get a rating.
They're all heavily sea-going. Even AZ.
IC has a 22 week A school, STG has a six week electronic prep school in Great Lakes, then 10 week A school in San Diego. If either of those are truly offered, GRAB one even if he needs to extend his contract a year or so.
Brienne - Anti M has given you some very good info for your Sailor. Hopefully he will be able to get one of the ratings offered.
