My son made it to boot camp last night, and now I have a few questions.  My husband, who was in the USAF, believes the holiday today will delay some of the normal in processing, since some people will be out for the 4th. Does anyone know if that is the case. I know in the long run it doesn’t matter.  It just helps me to have some idea of what he’s going though.

We were also also told at his recruiters office that there is a chance he might be able to kep his phone at boot camp, locked up of course, has anyone heard of that happening?  I did send a phone card with him, I just can’t believe they would allow them to keep the phone especially a smart phone.  It would be nice though.

I really feel like it hasn’t hit me yet that he’s gone.  I’ve tried to talk to him several times.  I can’t wait till I can get a letter from him.

Thank you!

Hi ShellyMarie

I am new to this site too. My daughter left for boot camp two weeks ago. I just recently received her box and still waiting for a letter. I’m guessing within the next week? I too am from Southern California and had the same question as you did regarding whether or not the recruits hear any news. I don’t want my daughter to worry either about us and the recent earthquakes. I didn’t see if anyone had answered that question for you. And I agree with you, it’s hard knowing after boot camp that my daughter will not be coming back home but off to A school and then on with her own life. It has been a really rough two weeks for me since last seeing her at MEPS and getting “that phone call”. My daughter had just graduated high school and two and a half weeks later she shipped out. Prayers for you and your recruit.

Mom of a future sailor - As for the recruits hearing news about various disasters in the area of the US, I think it may just depend on what their RDC's deem as reasonable for the moral of the division. I am know expert, this is just my assumption. As I recall, during Hurricane Harvey that hit TX, I do believe they did allow recruits to call home and also, as I recall there were some delays in flights out of GL for A school, so that may have played a part in it as well.

Prayers and then conveying (maybe without any details) to your SR that all is well on the home front, sharing some news of things that you are doing, will help them be rested assured that all is well. I would only tell them about the earthquakes, if they specifically write and ask it in a letter to you. This is one of those tough, how much information do we really feed them, questions. I know my son wanted to know what was going on, but he also did not want a lot of negative things - even in the regular news, because their brains are trying to assimilate everything else that is being sent their way and they are focused even more than we are on making it to PIR and hopefully family is coming to see them and they getting Liberty!! - Liberty = freedom if only for a few hours, to just chill and be their own person.

How strongly did you feel the earthquakes?  It was the strongest one I've felt, it rattled the house but didn't knock anything over.  Although a couple stores near me had some stuff fall off shelves and break.

That quick after graduating, is this something she's planned for a while?  My son only decided to join at the end of April.  I thought we'd have till December but he received an early ship out date. It seemed to happen too quickly for me.  I am excited for him, but I always hoped my kids would stay a bit closer to home!  :)

I still find myself trying to talk to him. I usually make a joke out of it with my other kids, but I know all of us have had our moments.

Hi ShellyMarie - I'm in Riverside - didn't feel the quake on the 4th but did feel the one on the 5th.  It wasn't too bad at our house - you're a lot closer to the epicenter than I am.  I know it rattled for quite a while though!  I had heard that some recruits were being allowed to call home to check on family regarding the earthquakes - it probably just depended on their division.

And yes, they do leave quickly after PIR - usually fly out Saturday at o'dark early or sometimes Sunday.

Did you receive your letter yet?  How are you holding up?

Not to add more worry to you but the PIR's for Aug. 2,9,16,30, Sept 6 and 13 are all only allowing 3 guests due to the large number of recruits graduating in each division.

I did notice that, I read that if there are more than 12 divisions graduating it will be only 3 allowed. I'm pretty sure they are at 15 divisions for most of the summer.   We haven't worked out the details yet on how we'll handle it, but we'll figure it out.  As long as we all can see him after the graduation I'll be happy.  Even a short visit is something.

That's the best attitude to have!  You're definitely learning the Navy way ~ Semper Gumby - always flexible lol!

ShellyMarie - Yes you should all be able to meet him at the airport. Make sure you have ID's for all of your children, or check the airlines. In order to get a gate pass to go be with your sailor, you will have to follow all of the same airline and TSA regulations, and everyone will go through security as well with their sailor. If I recall, you are planning on driving, so you may not have considered this aspect of your trip.

I like your little motto. I am very much a planner as well, although, I am learning to adjust with this Navy life. Sometimes we plan and then other times, we go ahead and wait till we are certain on dates, but that can cause us to pay extra at times.

ShelleyMarie,
I'm new to this page and your story speaks to me. My son is also Ship 14, Div 321. He also wears glasses and shipped out on the 3rd. We are a big family, too. As I read your story, I felt like I was reading my own. I'm so happy that we are now getting letters and a phone call this past week. Good luck to your son, and hold on, Momma. Our boys will be in our arms soon as U.S. Sailors.

Hello MommaLeah  It's great to see someone in my sons division!  And with so much in common too!  You don't live in CA do you?  lol  It has been such a relief to have heard from him.  I no longer feel worried, now I can just be excited for him, and still miss him of course.  Are you planning on going to his PIR?  We are driving an RV out.  I just booked my campground yesterday!

I received my son's form letter today.  I am so excited and relieved!  I know that no news is good news, but once 14 days passed I started to worry a bit!  His PIR is September 6th, and not Aug. 30th He's in Ship 14 Div 321.  I wonder if the holiday did cause the delay.

We can send our letters now!  I can't wait to get a personal letter from him.
