Hello, I am new to this site, and my son is going to Boot camp on March 1st,2011.  Upon graduation he is entering Nuclear Propulsion A school afterwards.  I can't seem to get any information from the Navy as to when Nuke school is starting.  since they said they only have classes starting when there are enough candidates joining this program we have no idea where he will go or even a graduation date from boot camp in Great lakes.  Does anyone else have this situation that has found any information as to a graduation date, as well as how long it may take for him to start A school in Charleston??????   Thanks so much & for creating this site.   Blessings to all our men, women & families

Hello, my boyfriend is in basic right now, his PIR is March 4th, 2011. He is also entering the Nuclear Propulsion A school after his graduation. I just recieved a letter from him this past Friday, and he said that he should know about his A school date in about three more weeks. As far as graduation goes, it's about 8-9 weeks after they start basic, but you won't receive the information or date until you get the packet in the mail after he is already in basic. He left on 1/2/2011 and we got the information about graduation about ten days later. And he'll also find out about A school while he is in basic, towards the end he will get his orders, and then you all will know.

Hope this is helpful!

I researched the same questions  a few weeks back.

My son graduates Boot Camp on 2/11/2011 and heads off to Nuclear A School

In Goose Creek, just north of  Charelston SC the next day.

All nuclear field A schools ( enlisted and officers ) are at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command ( NNPTC ) at

Goose Creek.  Three enlisted schools are MM 14 weeks, EM 24 weeks, and ET 26 weeks.

Checking aboard document here:  https://www.netc.navy.mil/nnptc/Enlisted%20A%20School%20Students.doc

They must go directly from Boot Camp to A school.  No Leave.

Beyond that it is just what you glean off the various sites.

Likely be a one week minimum wait before they have enough students to form a class.

My understanding is that unless you son opted for a guaranteed MM before going to boot camp,

he will be assigned to either the MM, EM or ET training pipeline during Boot, his input as to preference,

will be requested a few weeks into boot, and a week or more later the decision will be communicated.

That matches what my son experienced as well as posting on the Nuclear Worker web site mentioned below.

The NUKE Mom group appears to be more mom oriented and less student/professional oriented than the

Nuke Worker site.  Hope this helps.

This web site has a group called "NUKE moms".

Click the Groups tab above.

You may want to join that Group.

An even more authoritative Web Site, in my opinion, is

http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/

Covers the entire nuclear industry from the professional workers point of view.

It has a nuclear navy sub-forum that includes input from current navy students, both enlisted and officers,

deployed nuclear sailors and veterans.  Massive site and very professionally moderated.

Here is the link to the Nuke Moms group.

Thank you for an informative and well written comment. This site's was started by a mom who wanted a support group "for mothers of kids in the U.S. Navy" - it was never intended to be a place to gather career information for the future worker in the nuclear field. Because the site has evolved into a "go to" place for many moms/wives/etc. to gather information about the whole "joining the Navy" process, many of us have tried to respond as well to the demand for more specific information. However, it is really beyond our job description to research job opportunities (in and out o the Navy) for each of the job rating. In addition, most of us would not be qualified to comment on the technical aspects of these jobs. While some of us have had a few math, science and "engineering" classes in college, the complexity of the technology is beyond what we do on a daily basis. We are simply not qualified to provide that kind of support.

It would be wonderful if someone could start a group and take the information above and expand that into a central place for information for those transitional from the Navy into the civilian world. I have searched the internet randomly - there are many sites and lots of information - but as usual - it's hard to find any specific information regarding opportunities for any given Navy job rating. Job placement and transitioning into the civilian world will be an important phase and will be in focus in the coming years because the Navy is reducing it's work force. It appears that you have a really good handle on this. Can you start the group?

Sincerely yours,

JUST ANOTHER MOM ON THIS SITE.

I am sure you are correct the Nuke Workers site helps people with their careers,

But it also has many members who are students and instructors at Goose Greek, where

Nukes head for A school after Boot Camp.

Lots of good information about the Nuke A schools, and follow on Nuke schools at

Goose Creek, some of the answers to the question all Nuke Moms have about where is my

son/daughtler going next :)

This is a great site too. :)

A Schools start nearly every week; there is typically 30 to 35 new Sailors in each "A" School Class.  A School for MM (Machinist Mates), are only 13 weeks, while A School for ET (Electronics Tech) and EM (Electricians Mate) are 26 weeks.   Your soon-to-be Sailor will have a week or so of indoctrination before classes officially start.

After A School comes Power School, and that is the same for all 3 rates - 6 months.  The third phase is Prototype, also approximately 6 months of training.  A new Power School class starts every two months.

There may also be significant hold times between the schools - a safe estimate is two years in the training pipeline.

Now, as for the bootcamp graduation (Pass in Review, or PIR), that will be determined within the 1st week or 2 of bootcamp; it will be anywhere from 7 to 9 weeks from when he departs.

Look forward to seeing you in the "Nuke Moms" group.

Thank you for this. Very helpful.

My Son is also in Boot Camp, but july 01 hes graduating and going to Nuke School in S.C the same day..
My son in graduating July 01 and hes living for SC the same day!!
My son in graduating July 01 and hes living for SC the same day!!

My son also leaves for Boot March 1. I am really confused he also signed the nuke contract, but his recruiter told him monday he will go to a school in Groton, CT.  I can't find where anyone goes there first.

My son will be graduating boot camp and going to A-school  to be a Nuke. I have questions too so I am not much help. I am not sure how full the classes are or how long he may have to wait until he actually starts. I hope not long, he has waited long enough already, he was supposed to go to boot camp last July and it got put off until Feb 1st of this year, so he has really been waiting to start his training for his new life. He was so happy to finally go, and when I talked to him on the phone a week ago he was really happy and sounded great. I keep looking for info. I will com back and post what I find.

You may want to go to the Groups page and join Nuke Moms.  Very informative group there.  Mine is about to graduate Prototype, so I'm about 2 years into this Nuke Pipeline.
