Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

I just got back from MEPS and I enlisted as an Aviation Structural Mechanic. I ship off July 3, 2012. While i'm waiting to leave for boot i'll be finishing my senior year of highschool. I'm 17 years old and i'll be celebrating my 18th in boot. I hope to tryout and make AIRR (aviation rescue swimmer). Then of course my ship date will change. I'd love some advice from fellow deppers, or rescue swimmers on how they achieved their goal, or from ASM's, and from some of you about moving throughs ranks and stuff like that. I have a great recruiter who has explained everything about advanced pay grade and such but I need it dumbed down! lol It'd be really neat to find someone with maybe the same ship date as me! And on a side note: my boyfriend of 9 months is in the army, it'd be really encouraging if i could find a friend in the same situation as me to tell me how they handled it! Any response would be much appreciated, thanks!

Actually, DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in July would be better than the May group.  SInce you are the Future Sailor, join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there as he has already.

I think we've all misread things on here at times.  I'm just glad I'm not the only one and that we are here to help each other out.

AIRR?

What does it take? Heart, strength and courage.

If you have the opportunity to do strength training in school, do it! Substitute a study hall for it.

You need to swim. A lot!

You need to run. A lot!

Can you do 60 push-ups? These are guy push-ups, not girl push-ups. No knees allowed

Can you do 75 sit-ups? Hands crossed in front of you. Not behind your head.

Can you do 9 pull-ups? Overhand grip, not curls. Buy a pull-up bar and use it daily. You want to get up to at least 7 pull-ups.

 

The PST qualification requirements are only a guide. If you do the minimum, you will not be successful. When you pass a PST, your scores are put into a draft of all candidates. The best are selected into the AIRR program. If selected, your ship date will change based on AIRR needs and schedule. The drop/fail rate in this program is high at 78% so have a back-up plan.

 

Right now, you want to find out the recruiter who does the workouts for the SEAL/Special Ops candidates and start working out with them.

In order to get AIRR, you'll also have to pass a fitness test (after boot camp) where you mostly do a PST but also have to:

1. swim in a flight suit (can't remember how far)

2. walk 75 (or is it 100?) yards while carrying a 50 pound dumbbell in each hand over small obstacles under 14 inches in height.

3. walk 1 mile carrying a 35-40 pound litter (the fold-up stretcher) on your back.

 

So to get ready for these, you'll want to get a 40 pound weight vest. This one worked best:

Recommended: take a lifeguard course

 

If you're not scared away yet, then go for it! It's not easy, but if you have the determination to do it, you will.

 

 

I'm definately intimedated but I appreciate the tips! They helped a lot!
You can tuck a sheet of mole skin in the next letter you send her--be sure to let her know what it is if she doesn't know since some don't.
What I did was remove the sole from my Nike running shoes and out them into the boots for cushioning. Not sure if the shoes they give them will do that but it's worth a suggestion.
Extra socks also helps.
Just like Jimbo said...ask your recruiter who the specops trainer is in your area and start training with them NOW. If you get the contract before you go to boot camp, you will have to pass the PST every month before you leave for boot camp. If you don't pass every month, they could take your contract away from you and your original contract will take effect again. I can't stress enough to start working out now. You can buy a weight vest and start wearing that when you work out. It puts some extra weight on you and strengthens you more without being around your ankles or else where. They are comfortable, and if you train with that on, when you have to PST it will be easier for you to pass....since you're used to that extra weight on you. Run every day and time your runs....get used to running fast. Don't just go for distance. Our son's friend didn't get the contract because of this....he could run real far, but couldn't do it in the time allowed. Try and start swimming every day, do laps and get VERY good at treading water. Good luck to you and your training!!! :)
