One of the first thing new Sailors buy is a new cell phone, he will have money burning a hole in his pocket.

Also if you go and buy him a cell phone and he is flying out somewhere to "A" School and doesn't' leave until after you leave, he won't be able to have the cell phone on the RTC base.

With a short A school, he might have follow on orders right away, and know in bot camp where he's headed. A graduation surprise is nice, but most phones require a two year contract... and what if it isn't the phone he wants, or he's going overseas? Surprises and the Navy don't work well together. Finding out what he'd prefer is just a good move.

Another plan is to go get him a phone on Friday graduation afternoon (or Saturday if he's staying in Great Lakes). There are phones at the NEX and the mall, plenty of sailors pick up phones those days. It shouldn't take long and you two could choose together.

I'm just suggesting to wait until he KNOWS he will be based in the US. He might not, and would need to suspend his contract until he was in the US after a couple years ... and still have the contract to finish. If he's in a long A school, he might want to chance it anyway.

We're very happy with Verizon even though it is expensive, because it works in places no other carrier seems to reach.

if he is based in the US, he can get a regular plan and when/if he deploys he can have it put on hold and he wont have to pay. He just calls his provider and tells them he will be deployed, Sprint does not charge for military holds not sure about other carriers plans. My sailor has had the same plan with the same provider since long before she went into the Navy, it has worked out fine.

Many offer military discounts, as retired Navy our Verizon plan is discounted (nit by much though). However, there are no worldwide plans, so do NOT lock him into anything until he has final orders. For example, on deployment they usually use calling cards or the very expensive satt phones on ships. If he gets orders to Japan, an American cell phone and plan is unfeasible and he has to buy a whole new one.

Be patient, let him know not to lock into a plan until he knows where he's going. Use a pay as you go plan until then.

And if he's a guy with newfound independence and a paycheck, he will want to choose his own phone. That's the thing about technology and shiny new toys... he will know what he wants, not what mom thinks is the best deal. Trust me on this one.
