I just wanted to give some helpful information when you plan your trip to PIR. If your recruit is staying at Great Lakes for A School, try to stay at Navy Gateway. You can be eligible to stay on base at Navy Gateway even if no one else in your family is in the military. Once our son transferred to A-School after PIR he was only a couple of blocks away from us. He walked over to our hotel room each morning. We could spend extra time with him each evening because we didn't need to take the time to drive him back from wherever our hotel was located and worry that he wouldn't make it before curfew. Most parents I spoke to while we were there didn't realize they were eligible and were sorry they didn't try to get a reservation. There was hardly anyone in the hotel the whole weekend. We stayed until Monday after PIR because he had liberty all weekend and wasn't do back to his ship until10:00 p.m.
The PIR on Friday morning was absolutely amazing!! Worth every penny we spent!! A time we will never forget.
Thank you for posting. We have heard/seen that Sailors who are students at the TSC are not permitted to go to the Gateway Inn and a person representing herself as TSC GL PAO (no longer a member) posted on 1 January 2013, "The students are NOT permitted to go to the Gateway regardless of whose room they wish to visit. They are briefed on this and are instructed they are not allowed there." Your post contradicts that, but may confirm what was posted some time ago that a student could get a special chit to visit there if famiily is staying there. I am pleased to see your post since you just had PIR this past weekend.
Thank you for clarifying.
how were the rooms and ammenities?
FYI...students can not sponsor parents to stay at the Gateway inn, as they would have to stay with them the whole time they are at the Gateway Inn...which isn't possible as they have to be back to their barracks ever night.
i am in the process of getting approval to stay at the gateway, however, I was wondering what anyones stay was like. Thanks
