PRIVATE MESSAGING, POSTING COMMENTS & EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS

PRIVATE MESSAGING AND POSTING COMMENTS
1. Each GROUP, such as ours has a Comment Wall where any member can post but you do have to join the group first. You can also add a comment to any of the topics under the GROUP'S Discussion Forum. ANYONE CAN SEE THESE COMMENTS (members and non-members of the group)
2. On N4M BLOGS and FORUMS (from the Menubar with the tabs), you can start a BLOG or Discussion or post a comment (or a reply to another comment) on a blog or forum topic. ANYONE CAN SEE THESE COMMENTS (no membership required).
3. ON INDIVIDUAL PERSONAL PAGES. You can see the comments posted to a member's page as well as profile information, photos, videos unless that person has set their profile to PRIVATE. You can click on "Settings" under your name subtitle or you can go to "MY PAGE" to change your profile setting. If a member's profile is set to PRIVATE, only your "friends" can see read the comments. Click on my photo, you'll see what a private profile looks like. If I post a comment a member's page (we are not friends) and the member replies to me, she/he will be able to see the thread by not the rest of my personal info, photos, videos.
4. The N4M EMAIL SYSTEM. If you want to send a message which only you and another friend (or friends) will see, you can do that by using the N4M emailing. On the upper right hand corner, you'll see your name followed by "Inbox", "Alerts", "Friends" and "Settings". If you want to compose a message, click on "Inbox", click on "Compose", select the friend you want to send a message to, writ your message and click on send. You will also see next the "Friends" is you have any request. If you do, click on that and accept (if you want to - keeping in mind that any of your friends will be able to view your comment wall.)

NOTE REGARDING THE PRIVATE MESSAGING.
1. If you send a pm to a friend, a notification will appear in your REGULAR email system in your inbox. The text (partial text) of the message will appear. YOU CAN NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE VIA YOUR REGULAR EMAIL SYSTEM. You must login to the N4M site, go to "Inbox", open the message, then reply.
2. If you get a group message and you "Reply to all" then anyone on recipient list of the original email will get this reply (even if you are not friends with that person). You can reply to JUST the sender. in fact, it's preferable to REPLY to just the sender, rather than REPLY TO ALL.

NOTIFICATIONS WHEN YOU GET A MESSAGE OR COMMENTS.
1. If you belong to a group or have posted a comment to a blog or forum, you will get notifications on you REGULAR email system (inbox). This can result in a LOTS of emails messages. To prevent this, you can click on "Stop Following" on any group you belong to or on any blog/forum that you have posted a comment. "Stop Following" doesn't mean you are leaving the group - just discontinuation of the message notifications. There is no "Stop Following" to private messages from your "friends"; therefore, please be judicious in sending out cute graphics messages such as "Happy Friday", "Have a great weekend." etc. It's tedious to delete and therefore annoying to get those messages in your regular inbox, N4M inbox and your on your Blackberry.

2. You can also change your email notifications within SETTINGS
  • Click on SETTINGS (located on the upper right - part of your status box)
  • Click on EMAIL (located on the left)
  • The are six categories: Navy For Moms Messages, Requests & Invitations, Contents & Members, Moderation, Activity & Turn Off All Emails
HINTS:
If turn off notification on messages from groups, that means you will not get any notified when there is a message on ANY of the groups to which you belong. If you want to get notifications from one or two of your groups (assuming you belong to many), then don't check the option but click on "Stop Following" underneath the comment box for each group. Keep in mind the "Stop Following" displayed means you are following and "Follow" displayed means you are NOT following. Personally, I find the following to be the most efficient:
1) under N4M messages - check personal message, message from event and comment on My Page.
2) under Requests & Invitations - check all
3) under Contents and Members - check none
4) Moderation - check
5) Activity - check in my group, new member joins
6) Turn Off All Emails - don't check.

If you are going on vacation, you can check "Turn Off All Emails" until you come back from vacation. Be sure to turn uncheck this when you come back from vacation.

DON'T FORGET TO CLICK "SAVE" WHEN DONE.

Thank you... This is very helpful!
BunkerBee- I was trying to figure out why you sent me a friend request message saying my first & last name was on my profile. My page just has debra....what I don't understand is how You got into my profile information? I have been on N4m's for almost 2 yrs now, & I don't remember EVER putting my first & last name anywhere. hmmmm I have removed it tho, so......& may remove myself.......
Hover your cursor over your profile photo. It shows your last name as well as your first. Don't remove yourself. N4M is godsend.
N4M was not in existence when my son joined the Navy. In fact N4M started just March of 2008. We now have almost 30,000 registered members. Because the N4M site exceed beyond anyone's expectations, some of the guidelines are not compatible with the size of the membership. In addition, the number of members makes this group a "target rich" environment for spammers, scammers and email address harvesters.
P.S. I meant to send you to another discussion. Sorry!
CLICK HERE. It's is easier to do if you open up two screens. One for the link and another for your page. Open your page (My PAGE from above menubar). Follow the instruction on the discussion - PROFILE SETTINGS ....
well, ok dokey now - I'm no longer who I thought I was - no more debra - oh well, always wanted to change my name to DCSARSMOM, hahaha so it's gonna freak everyone that I've been talking to for 2 yrs. & BunkerBee, could you please check to make sure I did the "remove my name" thing correctly - I'm sorry, I work all day on EMR's & Insurance web sites & when I get home, I'm computered out....hahaha
yeah, I don't want to remove myself, but sometimes it just gets to be such a hassle - that's why I do my thing for AdoptASailor - I actually "hand-write" letters to sailors...what a novel idea.....LOLLOL
thanks, btw:)
DCSARSMOM and your profile name are very very good. :))
Believe me. I can't understand why when you first sign up, the sign up template doesn't explain this. Yes, I have emailed the N4M admin about this. I don't want to get too good at this job. I may own the job without any paid - can't have that. Gotta pay taxes.
I just purchased a Blackberry phone. I am trying to add comments to the site, but every time I try to sign in, it tries to load but it never does. I just get a blank screen. I went to Sprint to ask them about it and they said to ask if there was a mobile site for N4M. Is there? I really want to be able to post this weekend while I'm in GL for my sons PIR this Friday. Can anyone offer any help with this situation?
Barbara, I have a Blackberry (it's a year old). I have it set up to set emails from two different account (email addresses). I don't have a problem responding to my emails. I don't normally use my cell to search stuff on the net. I prefer to be at my desk. A few times that I tried on the Blackberry, I found it extremely frustrating - took a long time and everything looked goofy. If you are at a hotel, maybe you can take your laptop. Keep in mind, you get notifications of messages, comments, etc. on your regular email (the one you supplied on your profile) - you can reply to these notifications. You have to log on to the N4M site, go to your inbox to reply to a private message from one of your N4M friends.
My youngest son is a senior in high school he signed up to join the navy in 2009, as an Avaition support but now is having second thoughts, he wants to go to college first, he wants to join after college, will he be able to?
Ruth, I have to step out for a while. I will be back. I have a few suggestions. My son joined AFTER college as an officer. He went through Officer Candidate School not Bootcamp.
Ruth, if your son is strong in technical classes (such as math and science), then he could apply to the NUPOC program for this at least the last 2 years of college - with assistance up to 40K for tuition and room and board. After graduation, he would go through OCS. Or he could apply to be in a NROTC program (join the NROTC group on N4M). If he wants to proceed to enlist, with college credits, he could start at a higher grade, take classes during his enlistment and finish up using his GI bill. If he is really, really smart, he could apply to the Seaman to Admiral program. Try posting this in another area where more people will see it. Click on Forum above, click on School and Education Forum, start a discussion there. Regards, B
Please, pray for the victims of Fort Hood.
Indeed, we should never, never forget and pray for the victims; however, something as important as he victims of the Fort Hood shooting should be put somewhere where more people will see it. You should start at blog to remind people.
