OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

prototype housing
HI moms, I am new to the NAVY for moms. I wish I had used this sooner! Any suggestions on where my sailor can look for housing for prototype? He will be staying in South Carolina thank goodness, instead of NY.

My son was told he was going to GC for prototype, so I am hoping that is really where he ends up. He gets the 10 days off after graduation and then ready for prototype. I am not too sure how long of a wait it is until they actually start it.

Most likely he will stay in GC for prototype if they've already told him that (but of course, we all know that can change lol!). Just remember that there can be more delays in prototype. A school and Power school pretty much stay true to the schedule (unless there's a hurricane, which is rare but has happened). My sons proto grad was changed 3 times - but that was also in Ballston Spa which was having issues.....
Oh and it was almost 4 months to the day from when my son finished power school to starting prototype.

My husband is finishing up Prototype right now. We live at Coventry agreements apartments in goose creek. The rent is far less than BAH so if he is smart with his money, he will pocket some extra money each month.

Quite a bit, from my sailor’s perspective. Long stretches of 12+hour shifts with barely enough time off to switch days to night and back to days, rinse and repeat. Plus the constant need for check-offs. It is an ordeal, and they just have to slog through it.

Oh wow. Had no idea what to expect. Nothing is easy in this program. Is your Sailor deployed now? My son wants an aircraft carrier instead of Sub, so not sure how different the two ships are from a NUKEs perspective

For my husband, prototype has been the most stressful part of the pipeline. Sometimes working 14 hour shifts in order to get qualifications. It’s been quite an adjustment. He is in his last week of prototype and I am so thankful because it was much more difficult than he anticipated.

Oh wow. I am glad you guys are at the end of this training. My son said every part if stressful...even deployment because of the long hours. His instructors have been telling them their stories.

My sailor just reported in this week to an aircraft carrier, so I don’t yet know how much it will differ—but I’m pretty sure the long shifts and day/night turnaround will be similar, plus there are more qualifications to get! On the other hand, once graduated from prototype, they really are NUKES, and that is something:)

Anmarie - I only just saw this as I mostly am on this site from my phone just following the main discussion thread. First my son is at BS for prototype so I don't know anything about Charleston housing but if things change and he ends up at BS just ask.
But on the prototype vs Power school - for my son I kind of felt like he pretty much breezed through both A school and Power school (he's an ET) and graduated with Distinction from both with hardly breaking a sweat - he was on Vols at least 1/2 the time in A school and all of the time in Power school.
He is now about 2 1/2 weeks into the on crew portion of Prototype. Even while in the off crew portion I could tell it was a lot more stressful and for the first time he was a little bit behind the 'curve'. It seemed to take him awhile to figure out how to navigate the waters at Prototype. By the end of the Off Crew portion he seemed to have figured that out and actually was a tiny bit ahead of the 'curve'. Since being On Crew I have only talked to him once and that was just after he came off his 7 days of 3rd shift - nights basically. He was the most exhausted I have heard him since he left for boot camp. And he almost seemed a little discouraged for the first time - I'm hoping that maybe it was just due to the exhaustion.
So yes prototype is a whole different animal.

Anmarie, I think, if available, they offer on-base housing for prototype that singles can share. The rate is a bit higher when singles share but they are three bedroom houses. They might have a board with postings so that as openings become available they can pick up a new roommate.
