If he doesn't flunk or get kicked out, yes he will need to finish all 3 schools to be a nuke. He will not be shipped out to the fleet unexpectedly. The Navy pays to much to get them this schooling they aren't going to ship them out early when they don't know the job. I can't answer the wait before starting A school its been years since hubby did that and he left instructor duty back in 2011. Back in the day if you Sub Vol'd you mostly got it. But nowadays i don't think its a given. So that might be something to be prepared about. Yes he can potentially go overseas.. to Japan (surface), Guam (sub), Hawaii (sub). Getting married then sounds like a good plan. But let him get there and understand the schedule and go from there.
Jesse,

Jesse,

There are actually 3 nuke rates. ET, EM, MM. He will find out which during bootcamp. A new A School class starts each week. They usuall y have a week or so of InDoc (learn rules etc.) first then start class. 24 weeks if ET or EM, 14 weeks if MM. After that they have 24 weeks of Power School. There is a new Power School class starting every 8 weeks (except if Christmas is involoved). There will be a wait after A School until the next class begins. I could be longer than 8 weeks…

I could be longer than 8 weeks if there are a lot of students. The wait after Power School graduation can be a few weeks to many months. (It's called grad hold). Then on to Protoype which is minimum of 24 weeks but if the plant is down it will be longer. They do not skip any of these schools. Without all of these schools there is nothing they will be qualified to do on a ship. Even when they get to a ship they have to requalify for everything (at least on a carrier)

If he volunteers for sub he may or may not be assigned to one it depends on what the needs are at that time. At the end of Prototype he will be given his ship assignment. A few are homeported overseas.

If you marry please remember that he will be on very long hours at each of these schools. Besides the school day until 3:30 or 4:00 he will have required study hours from a few hours to many each day after school but they can only study at the school behind locked doors. Study can take place up til almost midnight. If his grades fall he will be assigned more hours. Usually not on Friday or Sat but always Sunday's (getting ready for the next week). Prototype has a crazy schedule with 7 days on 2 days off for three weeks then 4 days of t-week then 4 days off. But each 7 day stretch is 12 hours at a different time. one week will be days 7:30 am to 7:30 pm then a week of 11:30 am to 11:30 pm then a week of 7:30pm to 7:30 am then a training week of 4 days of 7:30 am to ? then the 4 days off. Then repeat again till graduation. I have met several of my son's class mates that married at various times during this adventure and most have made it through. Then there is deployment. Being a Navy wife is for the dedicated and tough.
