My son graduated boot camp in May. He went to school at Norfolk. He has been in Mayport for a little over two months. I have received text messages and calls from him twice in two weeks in the middle of the night. He is having trouble sleeping and last night he told me to help him he is not happy and to get him out of this place. There is of course a girl friend involved. He tells me his heart is breaking! I have told him that he is not the first to go through this. I have also told him to please talk with someone on base! He made great friends in boot camp and school but has not been able to do it thus far. We are only 5 hours away and we will be seeing him next weekend and to please focus on that. I am giving him great advice but as a Mom my heart is breaking and I want him to succeed in this life he has chosen! We have several friends and family who have been in the Navy and they have said that the first year can be rough. We all have that perspective on it but the late night calls are worrying me!
Thank you for any advice!
Thanks so much! I spoke with him yesterday after he got off watch. He still sounds really down. I told him to get in touch with the ombudsman and check out some volunteer work. I also asked him to speak with his chief. He called me again last night because he could not fall asleep. He just keeps thinking about "her". I tried to get his mind onto something else. We are coming this weekend and I asked him to figure out some things we can do. I know this hurt he is feeling will take time to go away but he needs to get out and meet people. Hopefully when I see him this weekend face to face it will help!
