My son had a phone with internet capabilities. Works great. He can contact me by phone, his siblings with text and he can stay in touch through FB and still be able to do his online banking etc..

He also had a laptop, but as mentioned no connection. so he primarily used his phone for internet stuff too.

My son bought a $300 basic netbook, and has some kind of connection for his laptop while his ship is in port, but I'm not sure exactly how that works. We still communicate primarily by phone, which he uses while in port.
