CBMom had asked these questions on the group page and I am posting here with replies. Question for those that have gone through PIR. My son is likely flying out the next day. How does that work at the airport? (Read my scenario above, it is probably the most detailed, except your sailor should have received their phone prior to boarding the bus to the airport.) So he won’t know when he leaves until PIR night and will call from his phone then once AT the airport? If your sailor has his orders, which he should have prior to PIR morning, unless in limbo like my son was, with his flight information. Only your sailor can give you the flight information, in the past we recommended sending a notecard to them so they could fill it out. They do have a breast pocket in their uniform that they should be able to fold the card and put it in there to hand to you after PIR. - Be sure to read through this information as well: PIR Weekend general info the information about the notecard is towards the end but lots of useful info.

And then just 2 of us can wait with him? When my son flew out in 2017 there were no restrictions ast to how many family members could be with them. How do we get permission to wait? Read my discussion. If your sailor is at O'Hare, you will likely meet him in the gathering area with the other sailors and families and the USO attendant will direct you and take you all to the ticketing booths. Otherwise, your sailor has to wait until you arrive at the airport before he can do check-in and then go to the check-in counter with you all to get you a gate pass. Be sure to read previous replies to this discussion about this.

Several family members want to see him at the airport but only 2 can right? No, you should be able to have all family members. That said, receiving a gate pass to actually stay with him until his flight takes off is a privilege that the airlines grant military families, they and TSA still have jurisdiction to decline any privileges.
Hi Lila,

Hi Lila,

Since this is not posted on the last page of this discussion, I just want to mark this as dated April 18, 2022.

Thanks for the update, I appreciate your response!! I am surprised that the sailors were able to stay in the USO lounge, because my understanding from being there with my son was that it was not very large (at least at that time) but it is good that they were able to stay there.

It sounds like things are progressing back to the way it was when my son was there almost 5 years ago, as I shared above. I am glad that you were able to quickly figure out FLEXIBILITY!

Regarding INDOC, each A school will have slightly different housing circumstances and liberty rules and when they are able to wear civilian clothes, so for others reading this, be sure to check with your sailor and see what their specific rules are.
Hi Chipmunk, So you asked me…tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-04-18:1971797:Comment:113128982022-04-18T19:35:48.982ZLilahttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/Lila

Hi Chipmunk, So you asked me some questions about this past Friday's PIR and subsequent flight/airport etc... So not knowing what was going on before 4/15 - our group that was headed out to FL together (approx 16) were told the day before that they were going to be bused out shortly after liberty check in to Chicago O'Hare airport.
They left around midnight. They stayed in the USO lounge basically right up until time to go through any security and board a 6 am flight out. My son's father was able to go to the airport in the wee hours and hang out with him while he was at the USO. I don't know if he would have been allowed through the gate since he also moved his flight up to 6:30 and so they basically went through security around same time and then parted ways to board their flights. They got NO sleep all night after graduation so they were pretty bug eyed. Once they arrived at A school, they were given a very short debriefing to get them through the weekend and then turned loose other than muster all the way to this morning. So they fortunately had a full day off yesterday and they were able to rest and get their rooms set up. Also if any of the Mom's are curious - our group is in "indoctrination" in a building to themselves for 3 weeks until they will be moving to their real room and put into the general population at which time they will be able to use civilian clothes within approval and also get some liberty including overnight liberty. So happy to hear that as I plan to drive down and see him and we are thankful to have him close enough by to do that. I hope everyone's experience goes well and yes - FLEXIBILITY is key. NO need to stress on anything you cannot change. Once you accept that, life Is easier LOL. Have a great day ladies!

Angela - As long as RTC does not restrict the sailors from being with their families after PIR then most of what is written is accurate, except for being able to meet them at the airport. That is going to depend on whether or not your sailor is flying out from one of the commerical airports or if they are being transported by another private or military means to their A school. That is going to depend on whether or not your sailor is flying out from one of the commerical airports or if they are being transported by another private or military means to their A school. Also, some of those who are flying out are being held in THU (temporary housing unit) and so they might actually be able to spend time with you the entire weekend. I think they must submit a liberty chit (request), so be sure to convey with your SR what your plans are for time in GL the weekend of PIR.
Is this still all up to date?…tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2022-01-03:1971797:Comment:113051972022-01-03T13:23:15.781ZAngelahttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/Angela765

Ima - Thank you! I have tried to stay as up to date as possible. Mine has been in 4+ years and yes, despite all that has happened, PIR does still seem like it was just yesterday at times.
