My sailor shipped out on October 1, and we still haven't gotten the forum letter with the PIR and ship number on it. The mail takes about 4 days to get from GL to where I live. Should I be concerned?

The form letter can take as long as 3 week to arrive, although most will receive it within 2 weeks.  Remember, "No news is good news!"  Yes, some who have recruits who arrived that day have received the form letter, but others haven't.  When you receive the form letter all depends on when the division formed since form letters go out after the division gets to its ship, which could have been this Tuesday or later if your recruit was one of the first in the division.  Keep wriing those letters and number them and mail them once you get the form letter with the address and PIR date.

You may also want to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Moms, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here.  There will be a lot of information and support for you there.

My son left on the 1st too.  I still haven't gotten my letter.  I did talk to his recruiter today and got an address, so at least I was able to mail him a letter.

Double-check the address the recruiter gave you against those at http://bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp.  Recruiters sometimes give a generic address for the RTC and if the street address is not correct, then mail can be delayed for up to 3 weeks.

My son left on the 1sr as well and we still haven't gotten the letter, but did get his address from the recruiter today, Letters going out tomorrow :-)

What division is he in?

If he in one of the divisions 009-018 or 902, join the group, PIR 11/21/2012 TG 2 – 11 Divisions (009-018 & 902), or if he is in one of the divisions 019-028 or 801, 802, or 903, join the group, PIR 11/30/2012 TG 3, to connect with others with loved ones training with your SR.
