OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

YOUR PROFILE SETTINGS - How To Change Your Username (Screen Name), Profile Address

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure your username & profile address do not contain your real last name.
Move your mouse to hover the cursor over your profile photo or name, look at the bottom address bar (bottom of your screen). The web address (URL) for your profile is displayed.
Mine is "http://www.navyformoms.com/profile/BunkerBee"
If yours displays your real name or your last name, it would be preferable to change it.
How to do it:
1. Go to Settings on the upper right (this is a shortcut to Setting on your profile page).
2. You will be taken to a page titled "My Settings". Here is where you can change your photo, email address, password, Username (sometimes called screen name), birthday, gender, country, or zip code (I put in a zip code of a nearby city, don't display gender or birthday). If you change your password, remember what it is. Hint - I pick a word that I like and alternate with month and date of anniversaries, year, etc - changing the word sometimes - just don't go too crazy or you'll forget. Remember, if your Username contains the last name of your sailor, you should change it; and if it does not, but is your real name, you should seriously consider changing it.
3. On the upper left of the "My Settings", you'll see Profile, Privacy, Email, My Page. Click on each to see your options on each one.
4. Click on My Page. You'll see 4 areas for setting up your page. There is a box just below "Address" the beginning is http://www.navyformoms.com/profile/ This is where you can change your N4M profile address. Mine is the same as my screen name. You can also use random letters and numbers. You can only use letters, numbers, and the underscore _ in your web address. So if your Username has spaces, just leave them out or use the underscore in between the words. Protocal for internet addresses do not allow for spaces.
Note: If you belong to another social network on NING and you put in your real name in the network, your real name will show up. Whatever is your latest change will be used on all the NING social networks that you belong to. Of course, you can create a different profile for different networks.
5. At the bottom of each section, there is a SAVE button. Use it after you make your change (s) in each section.
6. Go to your My Page and check the box at the top (hover your mouse in the space just below the N4M menu bar, you'll see the box color will change and a message "Click to Edit"). If it includes your real name, that is a good indication that you have not changed your Username or forgot to click Save when you thought you had made the change. When you first join N4M, the box has your Username there, something like Username’s Page or Welcome! Username and if you have not changed your Username, your real name will still be displayed at the top of the page. It will update if you change your Username. You can change it to put in a message to those who stop by or put in a quote you particularly like. Mine says: "Wherever you go, go with all your heart.". Just click on the box to edit the text and then click Save.

A special thanks to Lemonelephant for editing and revising this post.
I forgot what I put for my password. How do I remember what I put when I first signed up?
Heather, I have that problem all the time. If you were able to post the above message, then your browser retain the password and you were automatically sign in when you open up the N4M page. Why don't you go to the N4M profile page and post a comment for Colleen or Elizabeth.
I hope you know the answer by now, but in case you don't or for someone else who has this question: If you are able to post, then Iike BunkerQUEENBee indicated you most likely did not sign out before closing your browser and your browser automatically saved your sign in information. You can click on "Settings" in the upper right. You will be taken to a page titled "My Settings". Look in the middle and locate the Password section and click on Change and change your password to something you will remember. This way you can sign in to N4M from other computers. I hope that helps.
