Hi,

My daughter just arrived on board and I was wondering how it works when the ship comes back home over the summer or whenever that may be.

You always see images of family members greeting their sailors when the ships dock.

So how do we make arrangements to meet the ship and all?

I got to spend a couple days with her before she left so I learned my way around NAS. The Navy Lodge seems to be in a convenient location. I enjoyed staying on the beach, though I imagine the rates will be higher than they were last week. And yes, the ocean was freezing cold!

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Have been a member of ALFA for 2 years. But never have been able to figure out how to get any information other than when meetings have been in Everett. If anyone has any suggestions, would love to know. Thanks

Due to OPSEC there isnt much else they are allowed to tell on faceook or via other means. Unfortunately most of the information that the ALFA board gives at the meetings is classified. Most information has to come from your sailor. You can contact an ombudsman (I posted the information on another discussion post) They can give you any information that is allowable. Do you like the fb page for the ship itself? They give out information too that the command has decided to release officially.

OK...I'm confused (nothing new for me!). I have gone to the ALFA fb page and clicked "Join". Now I have to send my sailor an e-mail so he can e-mail somebody at ALFA to verify I'm legit?

Not so sure my Sailor will even acknowledge my e-mail. He is mad at me right now because we aren't 100% positive we can make it to VA when they pull into port, He thinks he will be the only one with NOBODY to see him "walk the pier" (as he put it). BUT yesterday we were talking about possibly surprising him pierside. Guess that's out of the question now that I have read all of this info! Can somebody please explain what my next step will be for joining ALFA? Should I have his girlfriend do the same (she is definitely going to be there when they come back).

This sounds way more complicated than going to PIR at Great Lakes 3 years ago! Thanks...

In the group description for the ALFA page there are instructions for how to get it all moving. They send an email to your sailor. On step two there is a link to follow that will take you to a form that you need to fill out. With a ship that big and the situation they are in there are going to be ALOT of sailors that will be getting off the ship to no one. there are a lot of families in WA that havent moved yet and cant afford to fly over. His girlfriend yes should do it but he will still have to verify that you guys are family. lol yea its a lot harder then PIR there they had more control they funneled you into the places you were allowed to go. Norfolk is a huge shipyard and a very important one especially in the area. lol there are lots of other ships over here :)

Linda you will have to be added onto the ALFA group on facebook, or email them and talk to them about it or your sailor will get information to pass along when its closer to time.

Here is there email ussalfa@Hotmail.com

sorry I dont have much else. They havent even figured most of it out yet. The ALFA board has to meet with the Base to figure out what the procedure will be. the ALFA board knows I share some information on here but they have asked me to be super careful on here since its a public forum and anyone can join. I only post vague basics on here to keep myself out of trouble and my sailor and to ensure their safety. ALFA can help you better or an Ombudsman bc they know exactly what can and can not be released.

Linda which ombudsman did you email? some of the information apparently posted is wrong but the email I posted above is from the ALFA board, I just got that email address from her about a week ago. You dont have to get added to the group but that is the way to get information outside of your sailor. They have to confirm that you are in fact someone that the information can be given to.

Also, like I said there is not any set guidelines for how to get one base right now. They will have to meet up with base security and based on time of day, amount of people coming, other events happening on base, and a lot of other factors to determine what the procedure will be for this particular situation. Apparently, there are lots of differences between homecomings based on all those factors and many others including the threat level. If you have a military ID then you are golden unless the threat level spikes (from like a parent or your own service by chance).

So your sailor will be able to give you more information when they actually have the information. I would say just email him and tell him to keep his ears open about anything having to do with homecoming. I guess sometimes they ask them for names of ppl that will be coming. but ALFA will probably have this information before the ship does so it would be better for planning if you needed that sooner. Hope that helps a little. I dont really bug my sailor with that stuff mostly bc I know it will be all jumbled and I can get it sooner through other avenues. lol He is forgetful. :)

oh well if she ends up wanting to email them again I could try to get her an email if she needs it or has an emergency.

haha I didnt want to assume you didnt have an ID :) just in case! lol

lol yea mine knows I am a control freak and he knows by now I will figure it out before he hears haha. I asked a longgg time ago about all this and a few ppl were like umm you realize how early you are right lol! I like to plan!

welcome.

haha he knew long ago that I found stuff out before he did lol I knew the date for the first extension before they even left lol. He didnt believe me until they announced the date lol I just got an email saying you were right lol. Girl me too!! lol I got mine beg of April!! lol!
