One other thing that I did for his birthday. I asked all of my family, even extended like my aunts & uncles, who would be Ben's greats, plus friends, to send him a birthday card.
I also did that for my DIL. She got over 50 cards. For DIL, I asked people to write how they were related to Ben, knew him or knew his parents.
For Ben, I asked them to refresh his memory (we have a huge extended family and kids don't always remember who they meet over the years) on how they were related to him, knew him or knew us.
they were both so surprised and happy to get so many cards. Some people included gift cards etc-BUT I just asked for a birthday card.
I called it a "birthday blitz". Everyone loved the idea. I then got Navy pens from the local recruiter. Ben gave me a list of all who sent him a card and I gave all of those people a Navy pen. It's a way for them to remember him in prayer.
A young friend who is a middle school teacher, had her classes all sign one of those giant cards, He got it, but not until he was back in VA, about 2 months later. They wouldn't send it to him on the ship.

Staci, great box! good job. I sent Ben a birthday present too, cards etc. Just fun stuff. Wish I would've thought of horns!

Hi Marsha,
I sent birthday napkins, balloons, triple chocolate cupcakes (Ben's annual birthday cake) and other favorite things of his. So I would suggest sending some of her favorite things.

We are planning to have an activity on the 7th. Any chance of having him speak then? I'd love to hear him, but live in Tucson and the 4th would'nt work for me.

Foothills mall works good for me too. At this point in my life, I am flexible, but who knows what tomorrow brings.
Cathy, flying is faster. I am excited for you!

coffee hour montly sounds good Joyce. I'd like to go on March 7th-that's Navy week in Phoenix too, so maybe we can see something about that.

I sure wish I had known about this site 3 years ago. What wonderful information you can get!

HI Joan, I agree with everything that has been said. And if you work, I'd give your boss advance warning about a potential call coming. The 1st time my son called, I was driving. I so wasn't expecting that, so I pulled over on to a side street so I could talk to him uninterrrupted!
Just write, just daily news, no boohoos-that's makes them feel bad. My son is on the Lincoln doing training and I still write him an email every night before I go to bed. I just tell him what I've done that day.
got the nicest email from him the other night-and he said my letters and emails keep him going. (he's getting a divorce-ugly story that I won't share).
Just be positive!
