As a former urology nurse, I can add a bit of insight in regards to the kidney stones issue from a civilian side (must say first a quick pardon to the sons, they hate me to admit or say I was in that field). Having kidney stones is a minor thing (unless it is happening to you, and then it is MAJOR), unless they are of the type that requires "outside-to-in" surgery (and these days that is nearly unheard of). So I must agree with Will, (which by the way-you and Hoppi keep going! Wonderful job your all doing! Love the 'personal touch' you give!) that to being considered for discharge, it must be more involved than just that. Yes, those who have a history of stones have a greater chance of reoccurrence of them, and being out at sea and having another "attack" would be an issue. But if one undergoes the treatments/care/tests after one, and keeps doing the Xrays to be catching any new ones early (and I think I could be safe to even say that the Navy physicians would have that under control), that even sea duty should not be a problem. There could always be a fluke incident....but that would be extremely rare. OK, gave my lesson for the day, and I am not that great of a teacher! Schools out, no quiz or tests today, that was a freebie! (PS, I said I was a "former" uro RN, I have "moved on" to a different specialty! Ha!)

Good morning, Will...I'm beginning to understand how it works...I just got a message from my grandson. He finished SCC 2 weeks ago, and is on the USS Porter waiting to be classed up in ATT. Thanks again for all your help. Vee

Will, you are AWESOME! Your comments have helped answer so many of my questions. My grandson joined the Navy in Nov. 08 and is in the GL Training Facility. He has completed his ATT (which I didn't know what it was until one of your comments) and is awaiting A school for GM. I don't know if he is in SCC yet or not. Thanks so much for all you do for us who are supporting our loved ones from home. Vee

Welcome SH1 Barton, I commend you for making yourself available to the parents and the spouses that may have concerns. I'm torn between being a former Navy wife and now a Navy mom.

Big difference! As a Navy mom of today, our sailors have cell phones, emails and social networks like this to keep the communication flowing. As a Navy wife, geez....I prayed for a letter to come once a month depending on where that ship was deployed!

The availability of information today certainly makes it a different Navy from the families perspective.
