Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Chris didn't need anything other than his military issue. Your sailor may want to get their civilian one while there since they tend to be expedited. Chris wishes he'd done it.

Hey does anyone know if a passport is required to get into Bahrain or just his mil ID and orders? My son just graduated MA "A" school and has orders to Bahrain. he is at home on leave right now. But they didn't have his passport finished when he left school. There are 5 others going over with him and none of them have passports yet. Please help....

Call the USPS @ 1-800-610-8734

Ask for the "Military Care Kit", which they deliver to your door, it gives you all you will need to send pkgs to your sailor; various "If It Fits, It Ships" boxes, customs forms, sleeves for same, tape, & labels. There is also a small discount on these boxes to ship. I still use them for my, once sandy sailor, who's currently stateside.

Dear Trcship13div412: Our son is a mineman so perhaps his packing was more limited than one who will work on base.  Here are a few insights that I recall having just watched him pack early December.  Two things he learned:  1) he brought too much with him and 2) don't sweat the small stuff as the navy exchange sells most of what they want, forget, or can't fit.  He purchased at The Container Store this folding contraption for his khaki uniform/dress uniform which he said kept them very neat.  Once this is contraption is folded up it is stiff and serves like a spine for the seabag which is large, floppy & hard to load in an organized way.  Work boots on the bottom, dress shoes in flannel pouches (also at Container Store) next, 2 digital uniforms, 2 coveralls, belts, sock stays, 10 pair high/heavy work socks, 10 sets of underwear/navy t-shirts, a few sets of workout clothes, lid, etc.  sturdy name tag, and lock seabag top clip with a luggage combination lock. He had two carry-ons (a backpack) and a heavy duty gym bag which contained his study materials, laptop, and a few toiletries which are helpful to have since the flight over can be a multi-day journey (e.g., toothbrush/toothpaste).  A neck pillow (horseshoe shaped) for the plane. In summary, he took very few casual clothes stating that they were non-essential. First deployment, he found shopping for clothes including soccer cleats very easy.  He said what he took over there, accumulated there ... all has to come back and thus his new mantra is "less is more."  For electronics he had a laptop and iPad.  He just replaced his iPod over there. He did not bring a phone as believes that its better to purchase at the exchange an intl phone with minutes loaded.  Last comment:  the US Post Office has a military box which you can ship over to him for about $14.50--not bad considering.  So far, we have sent 12 boxes...Dunkin Donut and Kona coffee grounds, large variety of home baking, workout clothes, books, magazines, instant oatmeal packets, bags of granola, chocolate bars, licorice, gum, etc.  He said many do not get any mail or packages and getting a box of home made "whatever" and putting them out for shipmates to enjoy can change a day's morale.  He said that they can never have too many home made treats!  Prayers to you and your family as you adjust to your son's Bahrain deployment and for the safety of all our deployed loved ones.   Please message me if you'd like more information.

Hope someone can help with this question...my son and 6 others who are leaving for Bahrain on the 21st have not received any response from their sponsor. Does anyone have any contact numbers or emails for sponsors. They are needing to know what they should or shouldn't bring with them. What the procedures are when they arrive in Bahrain and just answers to other questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Giving an update on my question I asked a week or so ago! My husband just found out that there are 24 openings for dependents in Bahrain! I am going to Bahrain! Yay! They are giving him paperwork and the Dependent Entry Approval form and once that's approved, I'll be heading over there! :D

Good morning

My son is there since dec 12.

They went to Bahrain during his last 2 deployments, he was stationed in Ca,he finished his tour there and asked to be sent to that base. He like it a lot!! He will be moving to a flat before this month ends. Those flats are awesome,I've seen them by internet. We skype,no problem, thanks to God!!

Hope you all have a nice day!!

There is wifi available on the base but they pay a monthly service fee for it.the service is good enough that we communicate frequently with FaceTime, or Facebook . My sailor chose to buy a cheap phone and uses calling card to call us. Hope this helps you out Trcship13div412

My son has been in Bahrain since early December. They are in Dubai right now, and he had liberty today. He is having an awesome time seeing Dubai and he posted tons of pictures on Facebook today. Such an amazing opportunity to see Dubai!

-Trcship13div412: I'm not sure if they have wifi on base, but sometimes they have it on their ship. Bahrain only has 2G service (at least that's what my son gets), but he had 3G service in Dubai. I think the cell towers just aren't as advanced in Bahrain. We text and instant message most days when he is in Bahrain. When they are underway, they do not have the ship wifi on, and he can't use his cell phone.

I noticed some other folks said their sailor did NOT bring their phone with them, but my son brought his phone with him. We have T-Mobile and we have had no problems communicating. He has text me from Kuwait, Bahrain and Dubai so far, and it's all been good. My son is only their for 6 months, so the situation may be different for those who are there longer, but that's what we chose to do.
