My son isn't actually a corpsman yet he will arrive at A school sometime mid oct. my questions are these if anyone can help me out....
1)since he will be in school over the holidays, how are the holidays handled there? will he be able to come home to KY even if for just a few days? or will he have to stay on base?
2)From what i can find out there is a lot of walking going on because the cabs are expensive. Are they allowed to have a Bicycle with them ?
3)evidently the food sucks in the mess hall. do they have to eat in the mess hall or can the by their own groceries and cook them? if so what are they allowed to have in their room to cook with/on?
4) do you recommend they have a watch with a second hand?
I just talked to my son who is a corpsmen. He said that most of your questions (1-3) your son will have to ask his commanding officer.
But usually they don't get leave for Thanksgiving, so your son might not be able to come home unless he is already close to home. They usually try to give them leave between Christmas & New Years. Doesn't mean they have too.
He probably will be able to have a bike, but needs to have a place to keep it.
As far as cooking in his barracks, he may be able to depending on if he has a microwave or not. But he might want to think about the money that they are already taking out of his pay for food at the gallery. He will be paying for food twice.
As far as question #4. Our son has a waterproof watch with a second hand (I forgot to ask him if he needed one with a second hand), but it might good for taking pulses.
Not sure that my answers were helpful.
