Good morning all - So nice to see some old friends here, Inga, Tex & Kristine! Y'all have ben missed! Hope all are having a nice weekend! Raining here, think I'll get started on that Navy scrapbook!

Kristine, I think not being with those guys in Afghanistan is making my son crazy, those guys train together, get to be such a unit and team. Kathyryk, you son will be very well trained, a very big part of that team.

We also have a group here for moms with kids in Afghanistan and Iraq, please join us there, there are alot of experienced moms there, like Kristine...who will answer your questions and just keep those prayers and support going.

I've never had any tech issues with this site, and I like it because it's always offered support, answers to me and doesn't have a lot of chit chat to dig through when I have time to visit. I know that chit chat is good for some and important to those that enjoy it, but it is not for me. I know when I see a notification from this site or for the moms/iraq/afghanistan site that there's a mom there checking in, needing an answer or just a reminder that our kids safely made it home.

Inga, I hope you fire up here, your daughter is always such a help with information we can count on for accuracy!

My son is currently in San Antonio as an instructor for medical personnel entering the military, teaching field conditions. I think. I don't really know...I do know it's a 9 day course and he's busy as heck when it's going on....and bored when it's not, which makes me think he's thinking about going greenside again.grrr. But it's his life, he gets to live it his way.

Of course, we could be sending the Navy to Chile now...so all the best laid plans go awry anyway....sounds like they were better prepared than Haiti, tho.

"Diane Haig" is not a real person. It's a front for an Australian law firm soliciting business in a lot of groups today; ignore or even delete if possible.

TDM, echo your sentiments and hope to see you & others over here, too!

Wade, congratulations to you and your son, and not to worry. Driving back to Scottsdale from San Diego at Thanksgiving, my son (a corpsman) and I detoured off I-10 because he wanted to see the Twentynine Palms base. I thought it would be all desert but you drive through several good-sized towns along the way (big enough for Walmart, Home Depot etc). The base has an impressive entry; the hospital looks great and is right in the center of things; the barracks we saw nearby looked new and nice. RE summer heat: I've lived in humidity (VA and HI) and I love Arizona in summer. It's not a myth; I don't really start feeling it till it heads toward 110. It's not uncomfortable at all the way humidity wipes you out, and nights are great. I hope your son has a car for getting off base. It's an easy drive to Carlsbad, CA (2 1/2 hrs), a great beach and town. An hour from the base is Cabazon, a huge outlet mall with upscale stores. 29 Palms site: http://www.29palms.usmc.mil, also click on their newspaper "The Observation Post" under the large photo. A good description also at http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/29palms.htm
Here's the hospital:

Hi, wade....welcome, I'd love to see this group flourish again!

Yes, 29 Palms is not beach territory, but I bet it is warmer than GL...and the sun will shine! Congrats to your sailor!

Inga, Thanks for your information. My son just got his orders for after A school. He will go to FMTB East and then to New Orleans, LA. He wanted Japan, but the last slot was taken just before him. I prefere New Orleans, since I am in Dallas, and it will be closer to home!
I'm just so glad to have him home for two weeks. He leaves on Jan. 2, and then I fly up on the 7th for his brother's PIR on the 8th. I feel so lucky! He will be gone less than a week and I will see him again!
Wade, Laurence says the same thing about GL! He is so glad to be back in Texas where the weather is MUCH better.

My corpsman son was home (Scottsdale AZ) for Thanksgiving, after which we spent a weekend in Dana Point, CA. Driving back he decided we'd take a detour off I-10 and so we could see what the Twentynine Palms base was like. I was surprised that the 40-mile drive northeast to the base took us not just through the desert but through several good-sized towns on the way, even passing a Walmart and Home Depot. The initial impression of the base was of activity & vitality, arranged much more compactly than Pendleton, with the hospital centrally located. The fences up to the entry are festooned with personalized posters welcoming Marines home; emotional. The bachelor barracks looked new and nice. In summer it'll be plenty warm (up to 120) but dry (I know it's a cliche but as an Arizonan I know 110 isn't bad). Right now now the days are 60s, with cool to chilly nights. Before we left the moon rose over the mountains, a beautiful scene. Overall Twentynine Palms was much nicer and more hospitable than I'd anticipated!

Kristine - Jake is in good hands at Bethesda, I met some wonderful folks that are stationed and work at the hospital, a special group indeed. Will keep him in my prayers for a good, strong recovery.
So wonderful that you heard from your man-cub! He too is in my prayers.

Ok - so I'm having issues with this site too - no posts since yesterday afternoon! I got some from my other pages though, perhaps we have used our quota of pages! LOL!
Nikki - hang in there girl, it's always hard to be the "new kid on the block". Have you looked into activites at a community center? Maybe some Mommy and Me stuff? Our family moved several times when I was a kid and I decided that when I had kids of my own they would never have to go to a new neighborhood and school and go through making new friends, they would have good deep roots at home. 3 of 5 have not only moved out of town but out of state! Go figure! So much for my roots theory! My husband says it's because they know full well that I'm never going to leave and they will always know where to find their momma.
