My sailor is on her first deployment and my stomach is in knots. I'm constantly checking online for emails or news of any kind. I can't seem to help myself. I keep watching the news and the world seems to be getting so dangerous. It used to be that the navy was the safest branch, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore. When someone asks how we're doing I try to smile and say fine, but I could so easily cry.

Ginosmom--probably the biggest change for me was when I first went grocery shopping, and found myself picking up all my son's snacks.  They had to go back on the shelf. And, then, the less laundry was strange.

My first church service when he was in bootcamp was a tear-jerker.  All the songs seemed to be about my recruit.  I found driving to our park and sitting either in the car (if I needed to cry) or walking the path were a good way for me to get in touch with my emotions.

I was not upset about "the sailor in the box."  It's a good thing I opened it and started his laundry from processing immediately.  Everything was soaking wet, as they did a final swim test and his swimming trunks were in the box too.  Oh, and yes, you will find legs turned inside out because when they fit them for uniforms, they just toss their clothes in the box however they come off them.

Be sure you have your recruits PHONE CARD activated NOW!  Otherwise they lose precious minutes doing that at bootcamp.  We laminated an index card with important phone numbers and addresses.

Take care and give a hug from us.

Well my youngest one has left the nest and being a single mom, it is really empty.  Trying very hard to adjust.

Welcome PC Mom!

oneluvdmom--I just stopped in to the recruiter's office today to say Hi.  Our sailor has been in almost 3 years.  It's good to keep in contact with the office, even if the recruiters change over the years.  Last month they let me speak at a DEPPERS meeting about Navy for Moms, packing parties, how to keep your Mom from freaking out, etc.  It was good.

I will definately pick up the book, I've seen it recommended before.  Yes, it will be a bit warmer (but being a So. Cal boy), it will still be cold.  LOL  then he is hopefully off to Nuke school in Goose Creek.  Matt has been ready for months, in a way the Delayed entry was good for him, but in others it wasn't.  Looking back, I was a mess all the way until we dropped him off at the recruiters office Tuesday am.  I have definately had more peace.  I'm sure it won't last once his cell gets shipped back home tomorrow  :(   but this is why we raised him to go off & do something great.  Navy has been awesome so far.  I am excited to see how they groom him into a man.  Hugs!

@Daysleeper, thanks so much for your reply, this site is already a blessing.  Matts flight should be landing in Chicago any minute.

Well, my only child (son) just flew out of San Diego on way to Great Lakes.  He has been at MEPs since Tuesday, I am thankful that he had his cell phone with him to keep in touch, now I am waiting for the text that he landed, & then the last call for a while "I'm here, I'm safe, I love you..bye"  My heart feels broken in half.  But at the same time I feel liberated.  So many emotions rolling around in my head I think it will pop off.  I'm so proud I could shout it off the top of a mountain.  But now it's time to figure out who I am as a woman, instead of the last 19 years being a Mom.  I'll always be a mom, just not as I am used to.

Congratulations to all of us who raised fine young men & women who are driven enough to take the oath of defending our country.  Proud to be an american, & mostly a "Proud Navy Nuke Mom"   Love to all

Kimberly--I've got a message in to the sailor about the Ball. Let's see if I hear from him.  He was there for just 3 months and that's why he was a duty driver for the Ball.  He had already finished his machinist mate schooling, and was sent up there to finish his welding certification for his sub work.
