Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

As for A school graduation... when I graduated, we were handed our certificates while in ranks in the hall, then we were dismissed. Unless you live nearby, I wouldn't bother. There's some moms who wouldn't miss it for the world, but as an old sailor myself, I think it is silly. It is a great accomplishment, but not one surrounded with the wonderful ceremony of PIR.

Tabitha... my married friend went through MA in TX. Her husband went for a visit as she could not get permission to stay offbase right away. I'd say go for a visit once he settles in, but don't make the move.
Emily, first hand experience will be priceless... I'm not even in the situation and I'm interested!
Sometimes they may take leave at the end of A school. It all depends on whether or not they have enough leave on the books and when their next reporting date is. If they just take the holiday leave, then no, they wouldn't be coming home. No time on the books.

Jenny:the ceremony was AMAZING!! He makes those uniforms look SO good! :) LOL I can't wait until he is finished w/school so we can be together!
Also, my hubby is headed to SA TX for MA training tomorrow-would it be worth it to go w/him?? I know the Navy won't pay for it b/c it's short training but I would kill to be with him!!

Vegas is probably outside of their liberty limits. On leave, likely not. On liberty, they'd not be busted for the marriage, but for the travel outside of what they're allowed. Great Lakes is 300 miles, PIR weekend is 50 miles. On leave is unlimited, but they generally are not granteed leaave during A school.

BTW, hubby and I were both active duty when we married, E-6. I was on leave between commands, he was on leave from his ship in Japan. No yelling, but we weren't in training status or junior enlisted.

After A school is a common time, because they've checked out of the school command and have not checked into their new command. this makes the yelling a lot less. During A school? They'll be hassled and maybe even counseled (in the good way). PIR weekend? That's a mountain of hurt hanging over their heads.
It can't hurt to meet with the chaplain and find out what is available for young couples just beginning. Information and knowledge never killed anyone, and marriage is hard (22 years to my sailor so I know!)
Great Lakes is in Lake County. I found the link for Lake County marriage licenses. They are not open on the weekend, but you may begin the process online.

Okay, I see questions about getting married on here? My son married during the Summer. Didn't have get to permission. He came home on leave, they got their marriage license and were married by his Uncle - who's a Justice of the Peace. Now, when he got back to base (Norfolk), they did meet with the Navy Chaplain for marriage "counseling" which is customary from what he told me. I asked him "Oh my gosh, what's wrong?? Why are you meeting with the Chaplain?" He laughed and said it's standard. So maybe this is what you've heard? But it's after the marriage.
However, this is all after A School. During PIR weekend, one can't do ANYTHING to change anything about themselves. No tattoos, no smoking, no drinking.....when you come back to base (on time, make sure or the entire division will be penalized) they need to look just the same as when they left for Liberty. Very very strict rules. They will be briefed and they will know all this.
