I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

Hey steph, no worries, that's what folks with experience do, help the newbies.

Congrats, Emily, that's wonderful.

Also, there is a new group for new moms (and wives and gfs too!!) which will have a lot of good basic information to help you find answers: I may know a lot, but I certainly don't know everything.

E-2 is a rank, his paygrade. A rate is the specific job he will train to do. Very easy to get the two mixed up if you haven't had the chance to learn the lingo.
Comment by Anti M on December 9, 2009 at 4:51pm
The P-cola schools usually are grad and go. If he has to go Friday evening or later, no way for me to know or guess, sorry!

There are exceptions, some aviation rates stay in Glakes for ATT (advanced technial training in preparation for technical schools), but I don't know if Aircrew does... the technical rates certainly. The problem is "Aircrew" can be one of several different aviation rates, it isn't a rate itself. I know you're too new to make much sense of all that, if I confuse you, keep asking and I will try better to help you make sense of things.

Steph, most of the sailors must report back every night. Only a few divisions who have won honors, and others who have been serving as recruit RDCs might have the full overnight liberty. Some of the grad and goes get full liberty because RTC has out-processed them.

Do you know where he is going to A school? Or what his rate will be? Where he will be going to school often is a factor on where they must be after PIR.
Comment by Anti M on December 9, 2009 at 12:19am
moz, he only gets to invite four guests to the PIR. The others must go on standby and will likely get in. Which two will not be on the list?

You can look up how to get married in city hall, just google the county and marriage and it will come up.

Thanks. I do know about family chains. Keep it to witnesses (friends?) for the actaully legal part, then find someone with a huge backyard or maybe reserve a park, and have a big outdoor BBQ where everyone brings food and drink to share. That way everyone can contribute and you don't have to do anything other than find a place to hold the event. And ask for a clean up crew to stay after, and that could be their gift! (I do a lot of leave no trace camping and gifting of self, so I always seem to be thinking of that).

But you should definitely do what please the two if you the most, and let the rest of the family and friends work out a celebration later.

LOL, looks like I'm the only one here right now. I got married in Vegas with a JP. Dad's camera jammed, so we only have pictures of our bums in jeans.

I see what you're saying about it turning into a big wedding. How far does family have to travel? If they're nearby, maybe a potluck dinner after?
Comment by Anti M on November 30, 2009 at 1:35pm
Basically, they can marry without the request chit. The chit however, is an official notification of intent and gets the paperwork mountain moving. Many commands require pre-maritial classes or counseling, but not all. Overseas commands are very strict about marriage, this may be why I'm so very concerned with doing things "the right way".

Paperwork includes:

Getting you on the page two of the service record. This requires a marriage certificate and a birth certificate. He will need to know your SSN.

Then he enrolls you in DEERS, the defense eligibility enrollment reporting system. This is so the Navy can track which dependents are eligible for which benefits and allowances. This is also how the Navy knows he is married and should receive a travel allowance for his dependents (not always applicable).

Submit a request to draw BAH for you. Yes, he has to ask, it is less than automatic and he wouldn't want to leave it to chance.

get you an ID card. ID cards are like gold!!!!

enroll you in Tricare so you have medical and dental coverage.
