I'm a Navy Wife and I created this group back when I was a girlfriend and my now husband had gone to bootcamp. Its funny because i joined this website when they had under 50 members. This website has been sooooo helpful and I met so many people on here that gave great advice. I made this group so that we could all come together and give eachother advice and share ideas. I see that this group is growing more and more by the day, Im happy to see that because so many wives/fiances/and girlfriends are clueless when it comes the military lifestyle. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing about deployments, bootcamp, duty stations, etc. I want this to be the place you all recommend because so many people on this site are knowledgeable and very helpful. Once again thanks for joining my group and i hope you get all the information you need. I dont get to log on as much as i used to but i try my best to get on here. So if u have any questions feel free to make a discussion topic and Im positive that it will get answered if not, inbox me :-) Take Care ♥

First, use this link to find their rate. You will have to follow the links. If you don't know their rate? ASK. When you get to the page about that rate, at the bottom will be the sea-shore rotation. Most sailors get sea duty right off. Most, not all.

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/navyjobs.htm

"They" said shore base? "They" have no more idea than I do. Of course, I don't know his rate. But there are no rates which do not go to sea.

The best thing mentally is to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. One of the things to learn as a Navy wife, or Navy anything, is that things will flip on you and you had better be able to adapt.

I hate to encourage rushed marriages, especially for the very young. However, the Navy makes it darn difficult for girlfriends and fiances. You have no status. Marriage provides a lot of benefits, monetary and otherwise. If you are in a position to take advantage of any pre-marital counseling sessions, especially those aimed at military spouses, grab the chance. It is a tough life emotionally. If you have doubts, simply wait. I know that is hard, but don't feel you willlose him if you don't marry. If you do, you'd have lost him somehow else at some other time.

If you're pretty sure, go for it. I know it is a heartbreak and a hassle if it doesn't work, but there are times you must take the rick. Mt 1st marriage sucked and I was 25. My second, when I hit 30, has been wonderful. Had I married my sweetie at age 18? I'd never had joined the Navy and I think I'd have a very different and unhappy life now. So different for each person.

Oh, for those who haven't read many of my posts, I don't mean to be negative, I'm just straightforward and don't sugar-coat things much. So I'm just being me, direct and to the point.

And why is he thinking that, B-blue? Because there's no way to tell until those orders are in his hands. I used to be in the Navy, I know. What rate will he be? I could look up the sea-shore rotation for you.
Comment by Anti M on August 24, 2009 at 2:55pm
Trust me, don't wait until he is done with school unless you have no other opportunity.
Comment by Anti M on August 24, 2009 at 2:54pm
Be flexible on the date, things happen to change plans. Be aware he must ask permission, so the moment he gets to A school he should begin that paperwork. If his orders come in before you two are married, there is a chance you will not be going with him at all. If he gets Hawaii or Japan/oversea, you are probably not going to be authorized to go. He simply won't have enough rank. Sailors must be E-4 and above to take dependents overseas. If he gets stateside orders, he will have to request they be modified to take you with him at the Navy's expense.

I have a couple blogs you should read:

Even as two E-6s with spouse duty, my hubby and I were at the opposite ends of Japan. In two years we saw each other 28 days total. Hopefully you won't have to face that. Just know it is possible to get through it. We've been married 22 years now.
Comment by Anti M on August 24, 2009 at 12:48pm
Congratulations! When are you thinking of getting married? I have lots of advice on the timing.
Comment by Anti M on August 23, 2009 at 7:42am
My hubby gave me a diamond pendant from Hong Kong instead of an engagement ring. He didn't know my size! But he was an E-6 by then, so had a bit more pocket money.

When it comes to diamonds, do NOT finance through the jewelry store. They can and do finance nearly everyone. Why? Because they charge 27~33% interest. That's a bad deal. If you truly want a nice ring down the road, save a bit and buy it through the NEX. I've been married for 22 years and hubby decided to get me a real stone for my ring this year. I could have shot him! Man, don't mess with a woman's ring! He's a sweetie, but his idea of surprises don't always match mine. He did get me a wonderful anniversary ring for our 11th, put it in my drink under the ice. I nearly swallowed it. Ah, men.

The base on Point Loma is small, and has really good views of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. I did visit with a BF a very long time ago and toured one of the big boomers. Really pleasant area and there's a state park on the point.

The Navy has had animal training programs for a long time. When I was a little girl in the 60s and dad was stationed at Pt. Mugu near Oxnard, they trained dolphins there. The dolphins can locate underwater bombs and do surveillance, that sort of thing. Very cool.

Every state is different, some universities do have a waiver for military family members for one year. California did when I was there. Same as resident for one year. I registered to vote and got a state ID card (I don't drive) during year two. Not a hassle at all since the car was registered to my husband, who had kept his residency from WV. We had kept the WV residency while we were in Japan as that state didn't take out taxes for military, unlike my home of record state of Utah.

I was born a Californian, but haven't always stayed one. I'm a Utahn now.

Go to the Education office on whatever base you are at, they will have current local information.

I had my degree on hold while I was active duty, but finished with the University of Maryland in Yokosuka as a dependent. Finished a second teaching degree later, with the help of the VA.
