I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Hi JordansMomVet!!! In A school, he can have pretty much anything he would have at home.  Everything he has though will have to fit into his "locker" in his room (It's kind of a mini closet).  Everything has to be "out of sight."  Civilian clothing is ok, but I wouldn't take much at least to begin with because he has to do certain things before he can wear them outside of their "ship."  One of the first things my son wanted us to get for him was underwear.  I laughed until he told me he was serious.

One piece of advice....don't expect him to start Tech School and A School right away.  My son was on hold for from PIR on 12/5/14 until about the middle of April of 2014.

He may get discouraged because they don't do much while "on hold" except for a lot of cleaning and duty shifts.  Whatever you do, for him...stay upbeat and encouraging.  Lots and lots of letters and cards from home from anyone to keep his spirits up.  Remind him, school will start and then it will fly from there.  My son went to San Diego for C School and has been in Spain for almost 2 years.  He loves it!!  Good luck to him and lots and lots of hugs to you!!

anyone know what the school allows them to have in way of personal items?  Son will graduate bootcamp 8/25.

I will bring his cell phone, but what about civilian clothing, underwear, tennis shoes, headphones, etc?

or if someone can point me to a GM A school online listing?

I assume not much can be brought.

Still waiting on a letter from him but found he will be in Ship Staff. Time ticks ...by...so....slow

Hi and Welcome ProudNavyGirlfriend. My son and NavyMom2014 graduated boot camp, A school and C school together but parted to go to different duty stations. Her GM got Spain mine got Hawaii. Mine has only been on a short deployment and will do a long one later this year.

You will meet a lot of people on this site and others over the big wide web. If you get a chance to in person meet any of these new friends please make sure you do. NavyMom2014 and I met when our GMs graduated C school in San Diego in 2015 and have been friends ever since. It is good to have a close friend to compare notes with and share experiences with who understands what you are going through

The hardest part of military life is the goodbyes. Choking up every time you see someone in uniform, hearing the National anthem. It's all part of the military family. People are here for you when you don't understand something or having a rough day. Never be afraid to ask

God Bless your sailor and welcome to this group!

ProudNavyGirlfriend, my son has been a GM for thirteen years. The best advice I can give you is don't make plans! Welcome to the roller coaster called the Navy. My son deals with small arms. He's only been on a ship once, but deployed several times on land.

My son loves it!!  He has been in Spain stationed on a destroyer since November 2015.  He loves his job, Spain and being out on the water.  He has completed two patrols and getting ready to go out again, in the next couple of months or so, I'm guessing.

Good point, NavyMom2014.  I had forgotten about the Tech School.

All of this information is so amazing and so helpful. Thank you NavyMom2014 and MrsREC. I'm new to all of this so I'm just asking every single question I have. Do your sons like being GMs?

What you read may have included C school.  But, it didn't take too long for my son to get through A school.  However, be prepared for your boyfriend to have to wait for his orders after he completes A school.  My son waited for his orders for about 2 months before he found out where he was being sent to.  It was pretty frustrating.

Hi!  My son's PIR was Dec 5, 2014.  He was on hold until his group "classed up" in the middle of April of 2015 when he started Tech School which was about 4 weeks and then he graduated from A school the end of July.  He decided to specialize in the 5-inch gun and went to C school in San Diego from the beginning of September until the end of October.

Thank you so much MrsREC!! I read other places it would be 7-9 months, so hearing it's only a month and a half, makes me feel so much better. Thank you so much.
